Subject: Welcome
Hi,
Welcome to the very first issue of 'Inarticulate'.
For those of you who don't know me, here's a little introduction.
My name's Dene Wilby, I live in Wakefield which is in the North of England in the UK. I first saw School Of Fish back in 1992 on the Crowded House tour and was blown away by their performance and truly believed, there and then, that this was a band that was gonna set the music industry on fire. Amazingly (as you all are now aware) this was never going to happen and a short while ago, Michael Ward & Josh Clayton-Felt decided to 'call it a day' and go their own separate ways. I then decided that I would do all that I could to promote the future careers of these two _very_ talented musicians. In December last year I published the Michael Ward WWW page along with a page for his new band 'Tiny Buddy' (sorry, at the moment it's out of action but it will be back soon!!!) and then came the JCF Homepage as soon as i'd received solid information about Josh's solo career. Up to date, i've had close contact with Mike & Josh via 'Fish Of Death Records' (the label created by Matt Wallace to launch Tiny Buddy last year) and recently have been in touch with A&M records. This, I hope, will enable me to keep you all up-to-date with the latest news on the careers of both Josh & Mike via this mailing list.
So, if you have anything you want to share with your fellow 'Inarticulans'!! Yeah, I know it's not a word!! send it along to me at
OK, we'll kick the thing off with a post from Marmi Maramot (who, I guess, most of you know!!) :-)
Take care,
-Dene

yup, i got to go see josh at the dragonfly, and i must say it was _the_ best gig i've ever ever been to!!! it was thoroughly amazing!!! first of all, the venue is really, really nice. and the sound is really good; everything's really clear; not like most venues, where it's too loud and the bass is too fuzzy and the vocals are drowned out and unintelligible. and it was really cheap, only $4 for valet parking and $5 to get in! it was so cheap, i could afford to bribe my friend to come with me and my sister and do the driving. anyways, oh, maybe i should tell you about the music. :) josh was REALLY good!!! still sings so beautifully. his songs are brilliant. a lot of them were funky, and some, like "paint the tree green," sounded so lovely. he was soooo excellent. i easily turned my friend into a josh convert too! he went down really well. the audience was really well-mannered, and i had an unobstructed view of my hero the whole time. the crowd was kind of an older crowd, older meaning everyone seemed to be in their mid-20s, and not the usual teenagery indie kid crowd at the usual gigs i go to. so, afterwards, me and my sister and my friend wanted to check out this disco-looking part of the venue, so we walked over to there, and then my sister says "there's josh!!!" and i'm like, "fuck, where?!?" and so she points him out in this corridor thing, so i went for it. i asked him for an autograph, and he was really nice, and asked my name, and so he wrote hi to me on the set list that my sister had easily procured after the show, and autographed it. and i thanked him. i told him that you said hi, and he says to tell you hello for him. gosh, you should've seen me afterwards; i was literally jumping up and down and relating the whole incident to my sister, and stuck the set list onto the front of the sof t-shirt i was wearing, and hung out at my friend's place afterwards, wearing the set list, and then my friend was really generous and gave me a frame to put it in and everything. aren't you happy for me?!?
still reeling with the feeling,
marmi

dene et al thank you for following the careers of both JCF and M. Ward......both are worthy of world wide attention.
here is all i have to offer at this time.......it has been about a year and a half? since i have heard Tiny Buddy......a must for live music fans.....really.
M. Ward is no longer with Hiatt....although i am sure that this is not news for most fans.......hopefully Tiny Buddy will release something soon.
i will see the JCF show in Portland, OR on dec 3.....have not heard anything from the new album....i think i will go blindly into this show and just absorb the music for the first time live instead of knowing the material beforehand........i hope the show goes well....i am excited
that is all for now

Just a quick note to tell you that the links from The Josh Clayton-Felt WWW page are now active (apart from the Brown Betty link). This now gives you....

The Fish Of Death Records World Wide Web Page
The School Of Fish World Wide Web Page
The Tiny Buddy World Wide Web Page
If i've missed anything, please feel free to drop me a line with any corrections/additions you might want to make.
Steven - You will find an order form for Tiny Buddy records on the Fish Of Death page. The CD is called 'Ginormous' and it's amazing (as you can imagine.....).
I've included links to these pages on Yahoo and The Ultimate Band List and this list also gets a mention on the UBL too so C'MON, let's have those contributions :-)
Take care, i'll see you next issue,

hey inarticulans,
i have some new interesting stuff for you all to read on the school of fish page that my twin sister and i did, the official capitol records press releases for the two albums. won't you all stop by to check 'em out? i think they're bloody insightful. find out what "take me anywhere" and the first album were almost going to be called, and other neato factoids.

Thanks for the update on your SOF pages, Marmi. I checked them out the other day and love 'em. It's great that a band as like School Of Fish has 2 pages on the WWW and not just 1 (unlike some lesser bands!!).
I've got some bad news though. The Fish Of Death pages will be down for a week or two because my IP is only allowing me 512Kb of space at the moment and not 1Mb. However, the Josh, Mike & SOF pages will stay put, which I suppose is the important thing. Anyway, we now have 9 members (1 extra per issue????). So a big Inarticulate welcome goes to David Noble **cue round of applause**. Feel free to drop anything in to the list anytime David and I hope you enjoy it here.
OK, I know you're all busy people but I have an idea for a new set of pages. If you have any photos of yourself and any members of SOF along with a story of how you met etc etc, i'd love to include them on a Web page which will be linked to Josh & Mike's respective pages. I know this sounds a little 'geekish' & 'fanboyish' but i'm pretty sure I could make an interesting page from it and we'll get to put some faces to the names on the list. Let me know what any of you think.
Well, that's it for another issue. Hopefully we'll have more stuff for you to read in future weeks. If any of you want to keep us informed on how 'Soon Enough' is selling (possible chart positions etc etc) that would be great.
Take care all

Hi there all,
Well, we're on issue 4 already and up to 12 subscribers!!! Hello to Maria, Matthew & Mike. Matthew sent me a query regarding School of Fish T.Shirts and i've decided to include it here because many of you might be able to help. I'm a little helpless with things like that, living across the water 'n' all. For the next issue i'm gonna try and get a definite release date for 'Inarticulate Nature Boy' and i'll pass that on, hopefully with future tour dates in the New Year. In the meantime, happy holidays!! I believe you guys have just had Thanksgiving. You all stuffed on Turkey??
OK take care until the next issue,
-Dene
P.S. thanks to Marmi, i'm now the proud owner of 'Primary Colors..' ;-) If any of you would like to know more about this album which is a kids recording featuring Josh, feel free to drop me a line.

Subject: t-shirts?
Dear Dene,
I was wondering if there was any way I could get ahold of some School of Fish t-shirts. Are they still being sold? Also, how can I order Tiny Buddy's new cd; the computer posts some kind of error message when I try to on the internet. Finally, is Josh's new single, "Soon Enough," out in the stores yet?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi there everyone,
Just to let you all know that I spoke with A&M this evening (your morning!!) who tell me that the Josh Clayton-Felt album 'Inarticulate Nature Boy' is to be released in the United States on February 22nd 1996.
They are also sending me new tour dates which will take place January through February 1996 in support of the release. As soon as I have them you will too because I will immediately send an issue of 'Inarticulate' to publish them as well as update the WWW pages. The news of the CD release has also been added if anyone wants to check it out.
OK, that's all I have to say this issue because no-one contributed anything :-( However, we now have 14 members which can only be a good sign,
take care guys, and, as always, if have anything you'd like to discuss (however trivial) send it in to me and i'll include it in the next issue,

I have a copy of Inarticulate Nature Boy on CD. I was not aware that it wouldn't be out until February, so I'm glad I have my copy. For anyone interested, the track listings on the CD I have are:
Window
Soon Enough
Paint the tree Green
What do I Know
Dead American
Matchbox Head
Bigger Than Me
Inarticulate Nature Boy
Waiting
Doubt
Helpless
Trumpet
For the Soon Enough CD single, the track listings are:
Soon Enough
Dead American
This and Only This
What Good Is Heaven
The Difference of the CD I have and the copy of the album I have on tape from the summer, that I noticed right away, is that What Good Is Heaven is not on the album anymore, but released with the CD single. Helpless was a new song that I had never heard before receiving the album on CD. It's a good song. I'm glad Josh included it on the album. But who knows, the track listing could change yet again by the time the CD is available to the public.

Hi there,
Thanks for the info. on the album, Cindy. I wonder what made them decided to drop What Good Is Heaven from the CD release?? It's a great song but IMHO, Helpless fits in better with the other tracks on INB so if it was a choice between the two, I probably would have chosen Helpless.
Anyway, Marmi came up with a good idea which was for us all the contribute our top 10 favourite albums/songs/bands from 1995 which I think is a great idea and I personally would love to see what other stuff you're all listening to, so to kick it off here's mine.......
1. Inarticulate Nature Boy - Josh Clayton-Felt (predictable choice, sorry, but it kicks!!)
2. Insomniac - Green Day (100% better than Dookie)
3. Remixed Version - The Presidents Of The United States Of America
4. Tall Blonde Helicopter - Francis Dunnery
5. Ginormous - Tiny Buddy
6. Thriller - Brown Betty
7. Blur - The Great Escape
8. Squeeze - Ridiculous
9. Aimee Mann - I'm With Stupid
10. Anthology I - The Beatles (the single sucks but the album is really cool)
OK, there's 10 of my faves from this year, I hope '96 brings us some good music. Can I use INB as #1 next year ;-)
Looking forward to seeing some Top 10's,
Take care,
-Dene

I am wondering if someone could mail me a copy of INB. I don't want to wait til 1996 to hear it. Of course I will pay charges.
Question: What kind of style is INB, i.e. fast, slow, School of Fish like, etc.
Anyway, heres my top from 1995.
1 Warrior Soul-Spaceage Playboys
that is about it. Not much else good came out in '95. Just got Tiny Buddy last week, so I don't count that one, athough it is really good.
Top 10 of all time
1. Kiss-any of the first 8 studio albums
2. Eugenius-Mary Queen of Scots
3. Warrior Soul- Last Decade, Dead Century
4. School of Fish-Human Cannonball
5. Eugenius-Oomalama
6. Warrior Soul-Spaceage Playboys
7. School of Fish-same

TOP 10 o'1995--even if some of 'em were released earlier,THIS is the year I dug 'em the most!

#2--SUPERNOVA. If you ever get a chance to see these Space-men from Costa Mesa,CA.,GO!! CrazyFastLoud Pop FUN.Here in Too-Cool Seattle, even the hippest were actually seen to be Grinning and Leaping around...no small feat! Their album,"Ages 3 and up",rocks ala vintage Dickies.
#3--Jimmy Durante,"As Time Goes By'...a best-of that's corny and wonderful.
#4--"Sound of Jamaica":Fantastic 4-disc set that makes you stoned without even Smokin'.Highlight:Prince Buster's "Hard Man Fe Dead".Ja.Mon!
#5--School of Fish "Three Strange Days"single. What IS the eerie,non-diminishing Power of this devilish tune?Yikes!
#6--Velvet Crush "Teenage Symphonies To God"...that rarity,an Entire album that is good.Mitch Easter produced,it's a treat!
#7--Undertones "Best of"--eeven the Grinch will dance to these fantastic catchy chunks of chocolate.I'm thinking of starting a Pirate radio station to broadcast them!
#8--Presidents of the USA...well,after all,it is now a law in Seattle that you must own at least ONE copy of this crazy band's disc.Live,it's like a killer party where Everyone has fun!
#9--The movie "Babe"...about a talking pig.Made by George Miller,Mr."MadMax" threw us a complete curveball--This movie is SO GOOD!!!Touching and heart- felt, plus stunning visually---How'd they get the animals to talk?
#10--Friends,no matter where they may be.

Well guys, it's nearly here!!
5 days to Christmas and I don't know about you but i'm really looking forward to this break. 2 full days of realxing, sounds like heaven.
Anyway, have any of you had a chance to check out the A&M pages yet?? I guess it's a little difficult for them to keep the pages up-to-date but I think the presentation is quite nice even though the book thing takes _ages_ to download. Also, have you seen my pages lately?? I did a little bit of 'Xmas Decorating' on it and I think it now looks pretty festive, and so does Joshua ;-)
Thanks to everyone who's contributed to the list over the past few weeks, I really appreciate you all being on here. Let's hope that we're gonna have an influx of new members when the new CD is released in February.
So, all that remains to be said is....."HAPPY CHRISTMAS" to everyone of you and I hope you all have a really fantastic holiday.
Here's to '96, take care,

Hi all,
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday full of food, drink, music etc etc.. I know I did and it's taken me until today to get back into the swing of things.
Yesterday I got further confirmation that 'Inarticulate Nature Boy' _will_ be released on 27th February as planned. The tour starts tomorrow (January 7th) and I hope you lucky people get to see some of the dates. When you're enjoying the fine music, spare a thought for poor old me on this side of the pond (cue vioilins!!) Anyway, I may get to all the dates yet.... if I win the $60 million UK lottery tonight ;-)
As you all probably know by now, Josh will be accompanied on the dates by label-mates 'Dishwalla'. If you haven't yet heard their CD 'Pet Your Friends', do yourselves a big big favor and go out and buy it today. It truly is a fine record and i'm sure, after reading your top 10's, it'll be to the liking of most of you. I'm gonna start pestering A&M to give the Josh/Dishwalla line-up a chance over here in the UK.
So, if any of you make it to the dates, please feel free to drop any reviews, set lists, photo's etc etc into the list and i'll pop them straight on for everyone to view (17 members & climbing!!!!)
As for the WWW pages, i've just returned the graphics back to their normal state ;-) and added a link to the un-official Dishwalla homepage. Pipex are still dragging their feet with regard to giving me more WWW space to add Mike W.'s stuff but i'm pushing.
Question: I have a tape where John Hiatt is complaining that Mike Ward left him high & dry by refusing to play on Hiatt's record 3 weeks before they were due to start recording it. Any of you know what Mike's side of the story is??
Thanks to Chris Johnson for his top 10 list and everyone else who contributed. If any of you new members would like to submit your top 10's of 1995, please don't hesitate.
OK, hope you are all fine and all that's left to say now is 'HAPPY NEW YEAR',
until next time,

Just dropping you a line asking you to keep your fingers crossed for me.
Josh is coming to St Louis in a few days, and I'm looking for a ride.
Wish me luck. Here's a request: as an aspiring guitar player, I was
wondering if anyone could possibly post chords for School Of Fish music.
I've tried to figure some out myself, but most of it is shaky. Last but
not least, here is my attempt at a top ten list:
1. In Light Syrup---> Toad the Wet Sprocket Todd Nichols and Josh would
have to have the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, but it's hard
to choose between them. Who else could write a song about a custodian??
***well, to be honest, I didn't buy a lot of new cd's this year, and right now
that's all I can think of. nevertheless, I recommend this cd to one and all***

Hi,
As some of you may be aware, all the School Of Fish related links I maintain on the WWW are now back on-line to stay. From the Josh Clayton-Felt page you can now jump to links for:
*Michael Ward
*Tiny Buddy
*School Of Fish
*Fish Of Death Records
*Brown Betty (Tiny Buddy's Label Mates, well worth checking out!!)
Thanks for your patience when all those links never actually went anywhere.
I've also re-designed the Josh page to make it easier to view in 640x480.
As for Matt asking about SOF chords, you may want to check out the School Of Fish page of Marmi Maramot who is on this list, she has some SOF chords on there. The URL for that is...

Well, it'll soon be time for you to see Josh live on stage, be sure to send in any reviews/pictures you may have. If you get to see him, have a great time and say Hi from me if you meet up with him. Anyone want an English person to live with them?? Any offers considered ;-)

Hello all.
Well I am back at school now, but it is hard to get motivated; all I can
think about is Josh's concert. It rocked! Definitely worth the 3.5
hour drive. The night club was pretty intimate. At one point just
before the concert, Josh walked right by me, though I wasn't sure it was
him- his hair is so curly! It's hard to describe the music itself other
than saying that he is the greatest. The idea that he composed all of
it himself boggles the mind. I wish I could have heard his cd before I
heard him live, it always provides a nice contrast. I especially loved
"Bigger Than You" (written on his last trip to St Louis with School of
Fish) and "Trumpet." His band was pretty good to. He seemed so calm and
relaxed. At the end of his concert he said, "Thank you very much, have
a good nite, and, um... Buh-Bye!" I got to talk to him after the concert
(I told him "Hello" from you, Dene) and got his autograph. He told me
and this other guy that he had to load up his equipment and then he would
sign; I was afraid for a moment he would take off, but he was true to
his word. What a cool guy! Me and my friend noticed that"School of Fish"
was still labeled on some of his equipment; I was so sad when I saw
that. It was good to see that by the end of his concert, most people
seemed into the music. I heard one guy talking about how awesome he was
and stuff. Anyways, I hope that even if Josh gains the respect and
popularity he deserves, he will retain the quality of sound he has
always had. Somehow his music seems to strike deeper than those
superficial tunes I hear over and over on the radio; his songs never get
old; there is always some new rhythum or sound to be discovered. Here's
hoping that someday others can appreciate what we already know.

Once agin, if any of you need the dates via E-Mail, please feel free to drop me a line and i'll put them together.

that. I saw Michael Ward there, so I would believe it if they did.
The show was the coolest thing ever!! I was right in front of Josh the
whole time. The music is fantastic! HE is fantastic! Thank goodness my
friend Rachel was with me because she was able to sweet-talk the bouncers
into giving us "loft passes" which is basically a backstage pass. So we
went up there and talked to Josh for a while (he said he's never seen his
or SOF's WWW pages, but he heard a rumor about them), he gave me his
guitar pick, it was the best. We also met the bass player, Bobby, and the
drummer, Pete, who are also very cool. SO, my point is, DO NOT MISS THE
SHOW IF HE COMES TO YOUR TOWN! And buy the 4-song CD, it rocks. I'm
jealous that people out there get to see him, cuz I can't for a while.
But have fun! Talk to him, he's cool!

Hi,
I've made some pretty radical changes to the JCF WWW Index page. It's now a little more 'graphics intensive' and takes a little longer to download but IMHO, IT LOOKS GREAT :-)
I've added some little icons to take you to the relevant pages which feature pictures of Josh.
However, I would like to know if any of you have problems with a page which takes so long to download. I know that not all browsers have a cool disk cache like Netscape so it could be a problem for people with slow connections to the network having to download the entire page everytime they want to see it.
Next up, I thought it would be fun to pool our music knowledge (trivia side of things) and add to the following list of movies which featured the music of School Of Fish. The ones I can think of are.....
1. Point Break - Rose Colored Glasses (beach 'hair cutting' scene)
2. Encino Man - School Of Fish poster on bedroom wall
Anyone know any more??? Send 'em on in if you do,

Subject: Josh In Atlanta
It was fantastic!
Josh was in Atlanta last night at the Cotton Club opening for Dishwalla
and Jack-O-Pierce. Since I had another show at another venue later, my
only intention at the Cotton Club was to see Josh and then run across town
to my next show. The Cotton Club was having a showcase of bands (called the
Gavin Showcase -- I don't know much about it, but a lot of record company
executive types were there) so Josh only played six songs! :( They were
awesome just the same but I wished that they could have given him more
time to to his thing. I felt sorry for the band during the first song as
it was almost entirely plagued by every musician's nightmare: FEEDBACK!
They handled it well though, and it didn't take anything from the show.
I like his new sound; definitely a change. Whatever Josh does
is good. I mean, the more versatile a musician can be and do it well,
it's a sign of pure talent. The band as a whole really meshed. It was
fun to watch the drummer, Pete Maloney, make concentrated drummer faces,
and listen to the high vocal harmonies Bobby Ruth (bassist) did to
complement Josh's amazing voice. Even though I had seen SOF before, I
am now even more convinced that Josh has one of the most beautiful
voices around.
As Matt said in a previous message relating a Josh show he
attended a few weeks ago, the songs were great. I can't wait until the
album comes out. One bonus of this show was that they were giving
out free sampler tapes, so in my determination to spread the word about
Josh, I grabbed 3. Dishwalla (the band playing after Josh) also had
free sampler tapes. I caught the first part of their show, and I recommend
them. Of course, Josh should have been headlining, but then I'm biased.
;)
Love and music,
Lisa P.

Hey Dene,
I saw Josh last night at CBGB's in New York. It was fantastic the club
(or bar) was very small. There were at least three bands playing there and
the cover charge was only 5 dollars. (what a deal!!) Josh was to go on at
9:30 I arrived at about 9pm. The band on stage was finishing up so I walked
around and Josh and the rest of his band members were just hanging out
listening to this band. When they finished Josh and the others got up and
started setting up their equipment. At this time I went to get a seat at a
table right in the front. He opened with Dead American which sounded 10
times better live than it does on the CD. He really made it rock. He also
played Soon Enough and Window as far as the songs that I knew. Of the others
I think my favorite was Paint the tree green with helpless and bigger than me
making a close second and third. They all sounded great. Josh also
mentioned that the album is coming out on March 19th. I do not think I am
going to make it till then.....
The concert lasted about an hour. After I had him sign my copy of the
Window single. He was standing around talking to everyone and thanking them
for coming.
By the way tonight I heard WINDOW on the raido. I hope they play it often
and it takes off for him. Also I hope his tour leads him back to NY some
time after the album comes out.
Take care

Hello,
Thankyou to all who contributed to this issue, it's our biggest yet and we now have 31 subscribers!!!
Anyway, as Jessa mentioned, the scheduled tour for Josh has now been cancelled (all dates after 24th February) and he will now be
touring as support for Del Amitri. This is pretty good as he should achieve some much needed exposure as Del Amitri will be playing in higher
capacity venues. Unfortunately, this means that ticket prices will be higher and some of the venues may have already sold out. So, if you plan to
make it to any of the shows, please, please call the venue as soon as possible to reserve your tickets. Dates/Venues can be found on the WWW
page. If anyone needs an E-Mail copy of the dates, please drop me a line.
Mark was also correct about the album being delayed (again!!), it will now be on sale in the stores on Tuesday 19th March 1996.
OK, hope you all get to see a Josh gig or two,
take care,

Hi all,
Well, it's been about 3 weeks since the last issue of 'Inarticulate' so here goes with #20.
Jessa sent me an e-mail asking the names of Josh's band so I called A&M and Lianne gave me the following line-up....
Walt Vincent - Bass
Pete Maloney - Drums
D.C. Collard - Keyboards
I know you all met a guy called 'Bobby' on bass so I don't know whether he's been replaced/left so you'll just have to ask/see when you next catch them live.
I also just added the final 4 dates to the current tour which you will find on the WWW page. Once again, if any of you need the dates of these sent by e-mail, please feel free to drop me a line.
OK, there's not much to report at the moment except to say that 'Inarticulate Nature Boy' is looking like it will definitely be released a week Tuesday (19th March).
After speaking with Lianne, we decided that maybe it would be a good idea to find out the location of the members on this list. So, if any of you get chance to send me a quick note letting me know which City/State you are from that would be just topper :-)
I also thought you might want to know about a 7" vinyl single which is on sale via Fish Of Death Records - http://www.fishofdeath.com. You can order the record through their WWW pages at this adderess. Below is the blurb for the band 'Twig' and I would heartily recommend it, it's a great record....
>There is a theory circulating around Twig fans of this world that Twig is a
>genre that will happily span through many a musical landscapes and still leave you feeling
>like you want more. But you have to follow these instructions; slip the vinyl out, lay it over
>your turntable, and play twice a day, because there probably isn't
>enough Twig in your world. This happy little combo has its roots in London where guitarist &
>singer Louise Goffin led a seminal English version of Twig.
>Twig, now located in the United States, is a soaring and lusty trio without a care for the
>effects of commodification. The participants on Twig's self-produced debut
>single include; Louise Goffin, guitar & vocals, Brad Williard, bass, Josh Clayton-Felt (School
>of Fish), drums, and Jeff Trott (Wire Train, Sheryl Crow), additional
>guitar.
>Fun is what audiences can expect from Twig, together with an opportunity to hear some fine
>new songs. Persephone swaps her pomegranite for an electric guitar.
>With a sense of innocence, enhanced by an unaffected quality, Twig is immensely
>appealing. As they do everywhere and always, the lights come down, but the
>songs tilt like a camera close-up to the sky and you feel open and at ease at everything you
>see and hear.
>This female-fronted American band was born in England, nevertheless bears no
>resemblance to the Pretenders. At times psychedelia-tinged rockers, at others
>ethereally moody, and at still others pleasantly pop, Twig is led by the pure, almost naive
>sounding, but emotive vocals and songwriting of Louise Goffin. The
>double A-sided single"Starfish Girl" b/w "Barely Dressed." Twig has been holding court at
>L.A.'s blues cum rock cum alternative scenester hangout, the Mint, on
>numerous Sundays, where Goffin has maintained an innocent, approachable demeanor that
>immediately invites you into her world, musical or otherwise. And her
>songs, honest and personal evocations of life, love, and siblings, are as alluring as she is.
OK, that's about all I think, so take care one & all and hopefully we'll have some great new JCF reviews to publish in the next two weeks,

Hey Hey Hey ! ! !
We hit the big 40 today, pretty cool huh?? There seems to be a lot of interest in Josh out there and it's growing by the minute. Our 40th member is Mandy K. Swartz who saw Josh on the Del Amitri tour and was, quite rightly, bowled over by his performance :-)
So, I was thinking..... Maybe we should get a newsgroup going on USENET, so we can exchange news/views 24 hours a day. How does rec.music.artists.josh_clayton_felt sound to you all. If anyone knows an easy way to get this done, please let me know. If I don't hear from any of you i'll go right ahead and find out what to do and get it done.
You may also like to know that the a&m WWW site is now back on-line but it's still not very informative, IMHO, but you may like to check it out.
So, on with issue 21, over to you guys....

Hey o.k. iam finally off my little jaunt with Josh and "The Family Tree".
o.k. what happened. The boy is so random. O.k.went to Cleveland they were
awesome. I went to Detroit... they were awesome and I think that i already
told you about the radio station coming in through the amps. Next stop was
Chicago I got there late and had to say that I was Josh's sister to get in. I
went and hung out with the bass player. JOsh had this huge heram of girlsand
he looked a little shy. I just had to make fun of him..stayed the night at
the Rock and Roll Days Inn. That place is swank. It's just a great little
hotel. o.k. next went to Columbus their first night with Del Amitri. I
completely missed Josh but he said the show went really well. Del Amitri..um
Loud is all I can say. They are a typical pop band. I mean they are good but
it is a definite pop band. And it is getting Josh a lot of different
exposure. The crowds are a pretty good size. I went and hung out with them
afterwards ...um..when you see Josh ask him how he likes to be frisked. They
all got frisked in Indiana. good story. Anyways...last I went to Cincinnati
and they were fantastic. They really only played about 6 songs and then a
Hendrix cover. He has decided that he must have incense on stage now. It's
rad but anyways..they are all fine and wonderful. So now that I am once again
back at school for the first time in two weeks I will get that stuff out to
you! Take care.

Dene,
Um...Walt's nickname, the bas player, is like Bobby or something. His e-mail
name has Bobby in it. SO he is interchangable with Walt or Bobby and since he
got all his stuff stolen while in Michigan he may actually just switch to
Bobby (: I dunno. On their new stickers is the list of all the shows so if
you don't have it ..A&M does.. but I will type it in later. Or whatever.

Dear one and all,
I have just returned from spring break and I cannot motivate myself to
do all that homework I have waiting for me, so I thought I'd say hello.
I am thrillled to say that when I was back in St Louis this past week, I
heard "Window" on the radio once myself, and another person I know heard
it on a seperate occasion. Apparently the radio station even did a
little biography on Josh and everything. Let's hope there's more to
follow. Here's an idea that follows in the footsteps of a previous
idea:
I proudly present my "School of Fish" top 5 list:
1. Unrecognizible- if you haven't heard this song off the "Take Me
Anywhere" single, go get it right now! This is a really incredible
song; I think it has my favorite lyrics of any SOF song. I love the
contrast of the heavy bass line against the dreamlike riff that Micheal
plays over and over.
2. Fell
3. Everyword-don't you just love that really strange sound they make
that sounds like a door opening in the middle of the instrumental?
4. Fountain
5. Rose Colored Glasses-this song is one of many examples of the fact
that there are so many sounds and levels to every SOF song; everytime I
listen to them i hear something different
**"Save It For Later" even though it is a cover, this is a REALLY
awesome song; I wish I could have gotten the chance to see School of
Fish in concert; they sound awesome
Take care,
matt

We received Inarticulate Nature Boy today in the store (Camelot - ED) and it was all I
could do not to rip one open. We got FOUR of the cd's which is great
for a small town like us, and even got a notice to file under "C"
wrap-around. Looks like the record label is behind the release. Man, I
can't WAIT until Tuesday to listen to it. I had to run home and listen
to the Window single over, and over, and over, and over...One thing
though, I thought they were going to come in a neat cardboard
packaging. We have the regular jewel boxes. What's up with that?

Mr. Caw, great list, I don't have time to add my own today as i've gotta do 15 miles before breakfast but i'll add mine when the others come flooding in. Come on subscribers, let's have your favorite School Of Fish tracks, I think there's PLENTY to choose from.
Greg: RIP IT OPEN!!! have a listen!! Oh well, never mind, it'll soon be Tuesday and you'll be able to listen to it all day while you're working.
As for the cardboard/jewel case thing, maybe they just used cardboard for the promo... Anyone know for sure??
OK gotta go, until next time,

Subject: SOF top 5
HI! You know, there ARE plenty of songs to choose from- it's just a
matter of choosing- that's the tough part! But here's my humble attempt
to narrow it down:
1. Euphoria- the band closed with this one live at a concert in Boston at
the Paradise- needless to say, we were in euphoria.
2. Drop of Water- the thing that sets SOF apart first and foremost is
lyrics: "you're in my position, a contradiction to yourself. you stand
there just by chance, a second glance wouldn't help."
3. Fell
4. Under the Microscope- what a perfect way to say it
5. Kerosene- another stroke of great lyrical imagery.
I have to agree with Matt who wrote earlier that the covered song "Save it
For Later" is excellent- I actually did see them perform it on this little
boat in front of this mall in Cambridge... I know it sounds like I dreamed
this on a trip or something but it's true. School of Fish performed in
this little man-made pond outside of this mall in Cambridge following the
release of "Human Cannonball." That was when we sadly figured out that
they probably weren't going to make it to another record. They seemed
aware of it too because they were making a lot of good natured jokes about
playing on this damn boat amongst these really cheesy balloons and stuff.
But following along with the covers theme, there are a couple of really
excellent covers that they did which are gems: 'This is where I belong'
and 'Disconnected' are both on this 'Wrong' singles CD (which if anyone
knows where I could get another copy I would be eternally grateful).
Another really great cover is one they performed live, but I can't
remember the name of the song at the moment- it has the line "all the
hippies sing together"- maybe someone else knows the name of it.
Anyways, I was really disappointed to hear that SOF had broken up but I
was thinking that a lot of what I loved about them was the lyrics. From
what I've heard Josh wrote most of those, so I don't doubt that the new
album he's put out will be smashing! Unfortunately, the radio stations in
New Jersey aren't giving him any air time. Hopefully that'll change after
the release of the album.
Take care all!

Subject: How I got into JCF
Hey people, I'm new to the list, and thought I'd share how I got to start
diggin' this Josh guy. Just the other night...Sunday, I think it was, I
was falling asleep and 120 Minutes was on MTV (putting me to sleep as
usual) when I heard the opening strains of "Window." As groggy and half
asleep as I was, I maintained enough order to grab a pen (head still
bobbin' to the beat) to write down the name of the artist.
So the next day I go out to pick up the single (mind you, I'd never heard
of JCF) and I was kinda shocked because I kept getting the run around
from every record store I went to. It seemed like no one had ever heard
of him. Finally, one guy said, "Wasn't he in School of Fish?" Great.
I'd never heard of them either (Please, don't stone me). At my wits end,
I go to my last hurrah, my favorite record store (or wrecka stowe, as I
like to call it) and there I find my salvation: A maxi single of Soon
Enough another of Window. I ask the salesperson if they have the album
and she said its out Tuesday.
So I climb in the car, pop in the CD and the once familiar beats of
Window are replayed in full digital optimum stereo to my liking! Now
that I've shared all this with you, can someone tell ME something? Just
who exactly IS this kid? Most of the music I listen to now is old
seventies funk (Parliament, Ohio Players, Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder) and
Prince or O{+> or whatever he's calling himself nowadays, but I'm really
digging JCF's harmonies, lyrics, composition...everything! I got a
little from the web page (which consequently led to this digest) but no
one's seem to heard of him. I even wrote him a letter (Man, that This
and Only This song floats my boat...)
So, that's how I got into this world of his. If anyone wants to
enlighten me on him, or share their stories, I'd be glad to listen. My
e-mail address is at the top of this (long ass) post, and I'll be first
in line to pick up the CD on Tuesday (along with Girl 6 ).

Hi again,
Dani's post reminded me that I got an e-mail the other day from a friend who say Josh in a magazine, he wrote me...
>I was flipping through the pages of the latest issue of _Musician_ magazine
>with Gin Blossoms on the cover, and there's a nice little 200-300 words on Josh
>Clayton-Felt. There's a little black and white pic with him on a couch and a
>little bit of interview. The gist of it was that he took his time with this
>project and played a lot of instruments on it cos they're his songs and wants
>them done right. Also, he said the melodic character of his songs may be a
>trait that will come back into fashion. That is, tunes may become trendy.
>School of Fish was mentioned and the comment from the reviewer was that they
>were an excellent band but did not sell many records perhaps because of the
>melodic nature of their songs.
Mamta: the song title you can't remember is 'Let's Pretend We're Married' which was a Prince track.
Greg: I bet you're gonna be searching that one out :-)

Man what day! Well, I got the JCF disc Tuesday, BUT I didn't get to
listen to it until Wednesday. With school and work (and no CD player in
the new car until I get it put in), I was in hell. Here it was, on my
front seat, after waiting for so long since Human Cannonball, and I
couln't hear it. THEN, I got really sick after my night class, came
home, put the CD on the player, went to bed, and only managed to hear 3
songs before succombing to bliss (i.e. sleep). Wednesday, I go to
school, go to work, come home, and the first thing I do is put the CD
on, read my new Terry Pratchett novel, and realized that the Supreme
Diety was looking out for me. To read my favorie author while listening
to one of my favortie musical artists was just heaven. Does anybody
have any live boots of any School of Fish shows? Unfortunately, I never
saw them live. Also, I have no singles by them, so if anybody would dub
me the b-sides, I will trade you for some boots of bands I have. It
would be really cool if Josh's management allowed for a brisk boot
trade to take place of his live stuff (with no $ involved of course).
It works great for Toad.

Hi,
well, I think it's pretty hard to choose just 5 School Of Fish tracks because every song they ever recorded was a gem. So i've included the following list of titles which I think I would choose if I was told I could only ever listen to 5 tracks by SOF for the rest of my life :-)
Sooooo in reverse order:
5. Save It For Later - One of the rare occasions when I liked a 'cover' version more that the original. I was always a fan of The Beat and when I heard this version I was blown away. School Of Fish played it with so much energy and I think this was captured when they recorded it for the CD single. I guess the same goes for 'Father Figure' which was totally transformed after being given the Ward/Clayton-Felt treatment.
4. Greenline - Unfortunately this track was never laid down in the studio but it was still an amazing song. When I asked Mike Ward why it never made it to Human Cannonball he said that 'it just didn't sound right' when they came to record it. Many of you may remember it from the '92 shows.
3. Euphoria - Hmmmmm, just lovely. A true stand-out track on a perfect album.
2. 1/2 A Believer - IMHO, the song that could have launched them into super-stardom. I truly believe that if this had been released as a single and the video had some MTV airtime, the School Of Fish story would have been a totally different one. But hey!! who can tell what's gonna happen in the music industry??
1. Fountain - Has there _ever_ been a more beautiful song written by a 'rock' band?? I really cannot think of one.
Hey, I could go on forever but there's the 5 I chose after listening to them in the car today,
Hope you are all OK and enjoying your 'Inarticulate Nature Boy's', see you next issue,

As most of you are probably aware, Josh is to finish the remainder of the Del Amitri tour as support act. You will find the dates (to the end of April) on the WWW page in the 'Live Dates' section.
Once again, if any of you need an e-mail copy of these dates, please feel free to drop me a line and I will sort that out.
Chris: There's a date in San Diego _and_ L.A. !!!
FYI, I spoke with A&M today and was told that 'the big guys at the top' are eager to push Josh and his records and have _much_ confidence in him which is nice to know, let's hope they really mean it,

but your top 5 got cut out right after the words Greenline-- incidentally,
I've never heard that one??!!!?? I'm interested in any information anyone
has about obtaining old SOF B-sides or singles- the only ones I have is
"Take me Anywhere" and a dubbed copy of half of "Wrong."
As for the new album, to use his own words- "I am speechless, I am
tongue-tied"! Right now, I have taped "Paint the Tree Green" onto my
answering machine and played it in my car three times this morning. The
rest of the album is great too. It looks from the credits that he had
some backing from the SOF gang (Freese, Fischer and Ward all appear as
guests).
If you all haven't bought the album yet, please do! There aren't too many
great record stores around here so I couldn't find a copy of it anywhere,
so I wound up ordering it through CDnow on the internet- they are very
efficient and they are also selling the "Windows" single. Unfortunately
they are not selling any of the old SOF singles!

1. Fountain - Has there _ever_ been a more beautiful song written by a 'rock' band?? I really cannot think of one.
Hey, I could go on forever but there's the 5 I chose after listening to them in the car today,
Hope you are all OK and enjoying your 'Inarticulate Nature Boy's', see you next issue,
take care,
-Dene

Hi !
It's
getting stuff- don't think I've missed anything. They recently
updated prodigy's systems and my connection number got changed so
maybe that was the trouble. I'm gonna be around at the dates in
Bloomington, Detroit and Chicago if anyone wants to say hey!
See ya!
Mandy
P.S.
We've got crap record stores as well and actually drove an hour to
Indianapolis in a snow storm to get the new CD-well worth it at any
rate.

Subject: What's Happening?
Hi guys,
Firstly, thanks to all the 'missing persons' who wrote to me about their issues of this list. I still get 'Unknown Adresss' for '
Thanks also to Jonathan who provided the above tabs, cool stuff!!! keep 'em coming.
Hopefully, this week I should have the INB lyrics up on the WWW site and i'm hoping to add forms on the 'Subscribe' page for new people to use and it should look a little more 'professional' that way.
I got my 'release copy' of the album this week and was very impressed with the booklet/packaging, very nice use of colours on the cover. I based the brown colour of the WWW page on the single 'Soon Enough'. How do you all feel about maybe changing the background to blue to tie in with the album or do you think it looks OK as it is?? I value _your_ opinions for stuff like this 'cos you're the people who read it most.
I'm also gonna set up a 'mailing list' section on the WWW page where I will place these postings in hyperlink form for visitors to view.
The Newsgroup idea is still floating around and a big THANKYOU to Chris Richards for providing all the relevant details regarding setting this up. It would seem a good idea to wait until we have in excess of 100 members before we propose the group. That way, we can be pretty sure that it will be created. And HEY!! we'll soon be at 100 members anyway (47 & climbing).
It's really weird that one of the things that I really liked on 'Inarticulate Nature Boy' was the lead guitar on 'Trumpet' and when I get the album I see that it's actually Michael Ward who plays that!!! What would be real cool would be if Michael played that song with Josh at the L.A. gig this month. Anyone want to suggest to them?!?!?!?
Did any of you manage to get the 'Twig' single featuring Josh from 'Fish Of Death Records'? If so, what are your opinions? I notice that he credits Louise Goffin in the liner notes (Louise is singer in Twig).
On Wednesday 10th April at 3:00pm EST (time in New York I believe) i'm going to log onto IRC on channel #jcf. If any of you are free at that time, please drop by and have a chat, it should be fun. I will be using the undernet servers if that makes any difference.
OK, that's it for now, hope you are all well and i'll see you next issue (or on IRC)
Take care,
-Dene

Hi all, long time since the last one eh? Not much to report really apart from an interesting post from Marmi which comes next.
No-one answered Sasha's question about the Window single in Issue 26. She asked what the track listing was for the Window single and the answer is...
The tracks featured were the same as on the 'Soon Enough' single which were...
Dead American
This And Only This (my current favourite Josh track - dene)
What Good Is Heaven
I spoke with A&M and they seem happy with the sales of 'Inarticulate Nature Boy' which I suppose is a good sign.
Ok that's about it sooooo, over to Marmi to get your hearts racing......

Hey, I noticed that a band called "School of Fish" was scheduled to play at a
small club in San Francisco next month. Who is it? Do you know if the
remaining band members are trying to continue?

I met some girls at a coffee shop the other week, and one of them gave
me a neat JCF sticker. It's round and has the eye logo from the CD
artwork. Of course, it went directly onto my car to advertise the
mighty JCF. Has anybody else got one, or does anybody know where to get
anymore? The girls got them from the man himself after a show in
Charlotte, NC.
By the way, would anybody be kind enough to tape the School Of Fish
b-sides from any singles they released if I send them a blank cassette?
I don't know how, but I missed the singles when they originally came
out. I would really appreciate it!!! I could even trade some good Toad
The Wet Sprocket boots, or a good mix tape of some diverse bands for
it. Please e-mail me privately at
My dream tour would be:
Toad The Wet Sprocket
Dada (check out their new CD, it's smokin')

This is in response to whomever asked about School Of Fish reforming,
since they saw a band under that name as slated to play in San
Francisco. Well, according to my sources, there aren't any chances of
the band reforming. Most of the former members are busy with solo
projects. Josh, as we all know, is touring and promoting his new album.
Michael Ward's band, Tiny Buddy, is to play L.A. on April 25, and I
believe Chad Fischer will be releasing an album of his own really soon.
Did anyone know that drummer, M.P., used to be in the band, Sativa
Lovebox, after he left SoF? I don't think he is in the band, anymore,
though.
Oh, is there any chance of this list not being in digest form? Maybe
more discussion can be generated if it wasn't in that form. Just wondering.

In case anyone cares:
I 99.9% sure that I found the artist who did the cover for the Human
Cannonball CD. I was in our loacal "wierd ass" book store this weekend
and I saw this "magazine" (It was really a book) called "modern american
paintings". I was just flipping thought there and I saw these paintings
that looked just like the cover of human cannonball. It was kind of need
because I always loved that picture. This book was $20 so I didn't get
it. But if you liked the picture, you might check it out. Look under
the arts/potography/painting magizine section in any book store...

Hello.
Did anyone see the Josh Clayton-Felt concert in San Diego last week?
What did you think? I thought it was great.
I was wondering if the past issues of inarticulate could be forwarded
to me? I joined at issue 27. I have a bunch of questions that I
though might have been answered earlier. For example, who started
this? a dedicated fan? a publicity company?....
Thanks,

Hi all,
Another late issue, my apologies to all who contributed to this issue. Sometimes I have 0 time on my hands to do all the enjoyable stuff. I think Cindy probably has the right idea with making the list automated. If any of you have the relevant information to make this possible please pass it on to me. I know there are lists where you can choose list or digest form and this would be ideal. I'll have a delve into the issue this weekend.
Java: I will be publishing the back issues in HTML form on the WWW pages as soon as I have time. I will post here when it's done.
No news regarding Josh at the moment but I will call A&M this week and see what future plans/current plans are. I did see INB on sale in Paris last weekend in the School Of Fish section!! I see absolutely no sign of it here in the UK though.
OK, thanks for your patience guys, I really appreciate it,
Until next time, take care,

Java Solis-My roommate and I drove down to San Diego from school in Long
Beach to see the show. We usually see Josh in Los Angeles shows, but we
couldn't make it to any of them. The show was really good as (of
course). After his set we asked him to sign our tickets, and my roommate's
jeans. It was really funny, he didn't want to ruin them. Anyway we asked
him if he was going to do more touring and he said that most likely he
would be touring with the Family Tree on their own I think, starting June.
I could be wrong...I drank too much that night.

Helloooooo,
SO THEN!!! WHERE'S ALL THE POSTINGS?!?!?!?
I totally understand though, what with there being not much activity on Josh's behalf at the moment (unless anyone knows otherwise)??
Thankyou Chelsey for the information about the dates in June. As soon as A&M send me concrete dates I will send out an issue and update the WWW pages. Scott, you can get the tour dates via the Josh WWW pages at any time. I will, however, e-mail you if he's planning to play in your State.
I'm really hoping he's gonna play some dates on the east coast in June/July because I will be in Florida from the end of June until the end of July so hopefully I may be able to catch a show before he comes over to Europe.
A big HELLO to all the new folk on the list, we're now up to 60 members. Sorry to you all for the lateness of this issue, it _will_ be more frequent when Josh get's busier!!
The only thing I have to tell you is that i've made some changes to my School Of Fish Page at:
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/square/fh49/schooloffish/sofindex.html
They are mainly cosmetic changes and take a while to load but please bear with it because IMHO, it is well worth it. Check out the animated header and the animated mailbox at the bottom of the page!! I think you might need to be using Netscape to see the animation but i'm not 100% sure about that. I've also added a link to Marmi's (chock full of SOF information) page which kicks my page's ass as far as cool information on this band is concerned so make sure you head over there after viewing mine.....
OK guys, I will hopefull be calling A&M this week to see what the deal is and i'll keep you informed,
Take care,
-Dene
