I can't help but let my tears flow as i just found out the Josh has passed. I thought of him this morning as i was trying to think of a CD to listen to. I had packed him away along with my other CD's when i moved & have been to lazy to unpack them all. I discovered Josh in a Tori Amos concert in 1996 & found his music interesting & meaningful. I was really eager to buy the CD and i finally got it that year for Christmas (although i did not wait to open it, I was listening to it for 2 weeks before the 25th) What i do remember about that time was that his CD served as a sort of distraction at a time when my 22 year old neighbor was missing & ultimatly found dead & for some reason i found his music comforting. I decided to do a search for him this morning while listening to his CD so that i can learn about how far he had come since that time when i first learned about him. I did not expect what i just found...instead of learning of what he was working on now i came across a eulogy. I thought maybe it was the name of a song but it wasn't. It was written by a friend about him. It made me sad that we lost such a valuable human being with such a sensitivity to his art. I had intended to write a letter to him all those years ago but never did, & here i am now speaking in his memory, but atleast we have the satisfaction of knowing Heaven has regained an Angel.

I stumbled onto Josh, by hearing "Building Atlantis" on a radio station wxpn, out of philadelphia.I mmediately after hearing the song i had to get the album, i drove to get it right away.I was impacted by a smart soulful songwriter, whose influences reminded me of a time when music, had poetry, and irony, it reminded me of the beatles.Josh has become a friend to me through his voice, i am a songwriter too, and felt a connectedness to jOSH, IN THIS TIME OF DARK, AND MECHANICAL, SLICK MUSIC,jOSH'S VOICE RINGS TRUE.i am sorry for our loss, but i will do whatever i can to let his voice be heard.

My heart just dropped. I have been feeling Josh around me a lot lately. I went to a psychic this past weekend and she said he was watching over me always. Made me happy and tearful. Everytime someone knew comes into my life that I think is in need of the sensation that Josh's music gives everyone I play it for them. Played it for someone special this past weekend. He of course loved it. Dragonfly has become a huge symbol for me. Just felt like writing tonight.

Hello. I stumbled across this board a while back, and was deeply saddened by the loss of Josh. I saw him open for Tori Amos in Akron Ohio a few years ago, and prior to that I rocked out to "3 Strange Days" on Cleveland modern-rock radio. I recently wrote and recorded a song that gives props to this era, where artists like Josh and School of Fish could bring such a REAL and (not necessarily deliberate) POSITIVE message to the radio. It really influenced me. Anyway, this tune I wrote has a reference to "3 Strange Days" in it. Thanks so much Josh, and all those managing this site. I can tell by the frequency of posts and how current they are how enduring his legacy is. "Big Radio Song" - http://www.mp3.com/kristoffer

I was a huge School of Fish fan during the end of high school, and the beginning of college. I was able to see the band play a free concert at a Tower Records in Santa Monica, and went to their "real" concert later that night. At the free show, Josh and the other band members stuck around, and Josh was especially approachable. I gathered all of my 16-year-old courage, and approached him, asking if "3 Strange Days" was based on "Catcher In The Rye." His eyes widened, and he said no, but other people had asked him the same thing. He said he'd never read the book, but felt like he should. It was a short but dazzling conversation (for the teenager I was) -- but I've never forgotten that down-to-earth man who swept me away with his voice, and made me feel comfortable in person. It's been years since I listened to one of my CD's, but the other night I heard a cut from "School Of Fish" on the radio -- and I HAD to find out what happened to my formerly favorite band & singer. I was shocked and saddened to learn of Josh's death. What a talented and inspired person. I'll always be thankful for the music he created, and for the generous time he gave to me when I was young and it really mattered. Thank you for maintaining this website!

For the past several months I had been longing to hear my old School of Fish CD. I couldn't get it out of my mind for some reason. It reminds me of my college days both good and bad times. Mostly it got me through the bad times. I've had some very bad times this year in losing a very close friend. I could not find my copy of the CD anywhere so I started searching the used CD stores and finally last night I found it. I was so excited. I immediately skipped to my favorite song "Euphoria". I played it over and over again. I sing and play guitar so I immediately wanted to learn how to play it. I started searching the internet to find the exact chords and I was also hoping to find out what had become of the band members. I wanted to find out how to contact them to let them know how much their music inspired me then and now. I came across this site and was shocked to find out that Josh had passed away. I don't know him at all but I've been touched by his music and I'm crying just the same. I know all too well what it's like to lose a great, wonderful friend and person and my heart goes out to Josh's friends, families and fans. I wanted to share this with you to let you know that Josh is still touching people with his music. What a great gift to give.

Dear Laura Clayton-Baker, I've owed you a BIG Thank You for a while now. You sent me a Spirit Touches Ground post card and a great sticker. They both brightened my day! I put the sticker on my guitar case and the post card is in my music room. The other night I saw James Taylor on TV. He has always been a favorite of mine and I started thinking how incredible it would have been if Josh could have written some music with him. I always thought of Josh as a new James Taylor because he was such an incredible song writer and musician. I was wondering if Josh was into him? I bet he would have made some great music with Richie Havens too. I also wanted to let you know that Josh's music has helped me through alot of hard times. I have Cystic Fibrosis and I have seen ALOT of young people die from it, including one of my best friends (he was only 12). I'm 29 now. Thats old in CF years and sometimes I wonder why I have made it so long. But everytime I listen to Josh's music I feel a renewed sense of hope. One of these days I want to make it to California to see a Josh Clayton Felt memorial concert and visit the Descendants of the Earth. Thanks again and everyone remember PEACE, PEACE, PEACE....

My old band used to cover Three Strange Days back in the early 90's. I was just listeniing to my School of Fish CD and decided to go online and see what Josh was doing these days. I was very sad to hear what happened. I am, however, very happy that I got to see Josh when he was touring in support of his first (I think) solo album. He was playing at Saratoga Winners in upstat NY to a very small crowd. He was brilliant. My bass player and I stood right up front and yelled for 3 Strange Days. He looked at us and said: "This is my band now". So we shut up and listened to the rest of the show. We thought he showed a lot of class and that's how I'll always remember him. I think I'll get my new band to cover another one of his songs. God Bless. Aaron

Hi everyone! I know Josh's friend Jeff wrote to Susan to explain how the dedication of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" happened, but I thought other people might be curious. When Josh moved to L.A. his first job here was working for Gary Goetzman, the producer of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the film, got to know Josh through a mutual close friend (Jeff) and they used to love seeing each other's performances. When Gary and Nia were working together they discovered that they had Josh in common... At the time the movie was being filmed, in the early part of 2000, Josh had just passed away and as they both loved him and missed him they both wanted to dedicate the film to him. Our family is very touched by that, grateful, and glad that Josh is associated with such a wonderful, kind, loving, optimistic movie...qualities very much true of Josh as well.

My husband and I have been ardent fans for a number of years. Lat night we saw the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and as usual, we stayed to read all the credits. We were blown away to see that the film was dedicated to Josh and a few others. We are so happy to know that Josh and his music continues to inspire so many people. That someone involved in the production of this film was so moved by Josh as to dedicate the film. Can anyone explain how the dedication came to be?

Gwyn, On your question about "Center of Six," this is only one of a number of wonderful songs, from various stages in Josh's career, that have not yet been released. Over time, we hope to release all of them. We're actually trying to have a new, maybe "mini-release", come out in time for the Descendants of the Earth benefit next April, possibly "Center of Six," especially since it's about the six directions in the native American view of the world. We'll keep everyone posted via the web site. L'Shana Tova. Marilyn

Hi Colin... The best ways to find older Josh recordings would be either at C.D. Baby (which is linked to the site under "order C.D.'s") and they keep Josh's self released C.D.'s in stock, or at Amazon, which has had copies of "Inarticulate Nature Boy" in the recent past, and might have School Of Fish recordings, or if you're up for calling L.A., Amoeba Records has a lot of used C.D.'s and an amazingly thorough collection of new ones as well. Their phone # is 323-245-6400. We (Josh's family) are attempting to get the rights to reissue Inarticulate Nature Boy, and will announce it on the site when the C.D.'s are once again available. Anyway, I'm really glad you've enjoyed Josh's music and want to hear more! Best wishes...Laura (Josh's sister)

Josh, where do I start? I found out last summer, I was not expecting to hear something like this about you. It came as a surprise but I always thought I’d get to talk to you again. Every time I drive or walk by, or even when I walk down to the pond and look at the silo house across the water, I think of you and the times we had. We all had. Marylin’s pancakes in the morning! Skating and convincing you all (finally!!) to try skiing. Hogback, and Marylin’s T-Bar cake. Out shoveling the pond at night in a snowstorm so we could play hockey. Henry’s caesar salad with those spaghetti dinners and the walks afterwards. Sledding down the road after those ice storms. Remember the way we used to laugh at Harold’s jokes? The New Year’s parties. Monopoly games that went on for the entire weekend. Phaser! The old grist mill waterfall. Swimming at the Action Barn. Henry out skating around first thing in the morning playing his violin with it echoing off the mountian. Florida. Charades. Dinners at Poncho’s Wreck and it could go on but I'll stop… I also was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1995. Following 4 separate operations and 4 months of chemotherapy over the next five years, I was fortunate enough to finally beat it. To find out afterwards that this is the very thing that took you from this world leaves me feeling very conflicted. I so wish I could talk to you again. I can remember our long talks about music and I’m really happy for you that you got not only pursue what you loved but succeed at it too. Not everyone is so fortunate. The mortal world is indeed a lesser place without you Josh, but as you can so clearly see now your influence has touched a great many people. I can see you smiling. Peace for now Josh. I’ll see you again. Bill

I was thrilled to see Josh listed under the Dreamworks Label feeling that I had finally tracked him down. My mood quickly turn to tears as I surfed this website. My company interviewed Josh in 1995 in Chicago for an alternative music video show we produced called ShockWave. We were thrilled to get the chance to have Josh on the show and play his video. We had a great interview and enjoyed his live show that same evening. What a talent! I still have his promotional cassett, inarticulate nature boy featuring 4 songs which I play now and then. I would often wonder where this talented artist had landed because it was clear he was the real deal. As our show ended so did our conection with many of the artists we featured. My thoughts and prayers go out to Josh and his family. Josh's music still instantly lifts my soul, his spirit will not be forgotten...

to all who may read this message - i had the pleasure of meeting the guys from School of Fish and also Josh by himself after SOF disbanded, and i was forever touched by these men and their music. I cannot begin to explain the significance of what the music means to me, so i won't try. Just know that this was a tremendous band, with talented musicians and a vantage point of writing songs like i have not seen before or since. My heart has not healed from Josh's passing and never will. But his music lives on in everyone who puts an ear to it and echoes in the foreverness of time and space. For one tremendous summer, School of Fish was THE THING and ,for me, every summer is. The Human Cannonball CD never seems to get ejected from the player. My only hope is that others see the web site and buy the CD's and read his words and find out for themselves what i have known for a long time. I feel blessed to have met him and talked with him and to have experienced his music. I will continue to experience it. Josh - you are missed - you are loved Thank you for everything. jjf

After the concert Josh was coming out from backstage and I was right there in the middle of the crowd. I told him how great the concert was. He said thanks and shook my hand. Just a really nice guy.     I didn't know Josh very well. I hung out with him at a dive bar in Dallas, Texas after his band opened up for Paul Westerberg. I have thought about him off and on ever since. His personality was so bright and sincere. We played pool and he broke. He began to make one ball after another. His excitement level was skyrocketing. He kept saying in amazement "I've never made all my balls on the first try!" He was glowing, big smile on his face getting bigger with every shot he made. by the last ball he had, he was practically jumping out of his skin, and literally jumping up and down. I remember this moment so vividly, maybe it was because of his sweetness and sincerity, or because of the thrill he was getting. I remember getting excited with him, wanting him to do it, to beat me in one turn. I'll never forget that smile, and that wild hair he kept trying to tuck behind his ears. Today I read in of all magazines, Sound and Vision, that Josh had passed away. Even though I only hung out with him for a few hours, I became very upset. I realize after reading some of the letters that he had a positive effect on many people, and I am one of them. My thoughts go out to all those who were close to him. I feel lucky to have known him for that brief moment.

I have been listening to Josh's music since I was first introduced to Spirit Touches Ground on the Good Morning America piece when the C.D. was released. I ordered it from a local record store and immediately fell in love with it. The CD is so aptly named....not just because of the song STG, but because that is exactly what listening to Josh is like. You don't just "hear" his music, you can feel it! At first I thought I was a little wierd because of how much of a connection I have felt to Josh through his music. But I read messages from so many other people who are having similar experiences. I think the only explanation is that in addition to being a very gifted musician with a beautiful voice, Josh was, and is, an exceptional soul with such a strong spirit that he left a little of it on his music as a gift to remind us all that we are, above all, spirit. With that said, I will get to the point that I wanted to make when I started this message. For those of you who haven't had a chance to look at the "order cd's" section of this site, I would encourage you to do so. I have bought Josh's other 3 c.d.'s (Inarticulate Nature Boy was no small feat since it is out of production at the moment..... but thanks to EBay and a couple of attempts at sending money to Singapore, I finally have it.) They are all very different from each other, but they are all great. Now instead of going through all of the songs on STG and having a new "favorite" every day, I can do that 4 times as often. So many of the messages from people on this site seem to have that common theme of sadness that they never knew about Josh and his music until now. (I know for me it is missing someone I never knew...a very strange experience I must say) I just wanted to point out that there is more great music of Josh's music out there. Peace to all. Alisa

I was so touched by Josh's music and his story. I purchased my copy of Spirit Touches Ground and was blown away by his yearning, optimism and love of life. You can hear it all over this album...from Backwards World, Too Cool For This World, Love, Sweet Love to Building Atlantis. His essence is palpable.....And although I never knew him personally, I am happy to have been able to get to know him now, thru his music. And I would like to thank his family for giving me the opportunity to do so. The music and his story has touched my heart greatly and reminded me of what's important in life. And, I consider it a gift. Anyone who is interested in reading the article I wrote commemorating his life, please go to: http://www.geocities.com/allareaaccess/joshclayton-felt.html Deana

Hi Josh - I gave birth to a baby boy on April 20th, 2002. He was born one hour into Taurus (I wonder if you had something to do with that??). His name is Bodhi and I know you would really dig him. He's an old soul; a friend of yours???? He almost didn't make it: eight days in the ICU. But we felt your loving, healing energy and I thought about you a lot while I was there. Love you so much and miss being able to share this with you my friend. xxx Nicky

I am sorry to say that I just heard about Josh. I was looking for a theme song on the WB and they had an article about Josh. So I went to look him up and I hate myself for not knowing him sooner. I listened to some of his music and plan to go out and buy it. I really feel that somehow it was meant for me to hear him. I am so glad that the family has continued to let the rest of the world hear his work. I had a cousin that wrote music and never made it. I wish that his family would do the same. Thanks Josh for the good cry. I know now that there are still good people out there. Thanks for you spirit!!!!

Hi. I heard Josh on KCRW. I bought his CD that day. He touched me so deep. I can't get enough of "Deer in the Headlights". The intro is so hauntingly beautiful. I read a review that said the CD was great but at 14 songs it was a bit long. Fool. It's not long enough. Not to serve as your final body of work. He is amazing, thank God he was a musician. His spiritual creations will survive past his physical one. His soul will soar everytime another one of us discovers his music. This is his legacy. Rock On', Josh. Be happy and be peaceful wherever you are now creating more music. And THANKS. lisa

Hello Everyone! I want to apologize in advance for any incoherent ramblings this post may contain. I didn't know Josh, his music (well except for SOF which I recognized at the benefit concert), or his spirit until very recently. I feel like such a, such a...I can't find the words. But I really missed the boat and I'm paddling real hard trying to catch up. A special friend from Allston-Brighton has turned me on to some great music. She mentioned the benefit concert at the Knitting Factory. I checked out STG on the virtual listening party, liked it and figured I'll check out the concert. I didn't know what to expect. As the night went on I could truly feel a spirit in the room. Here were all these people coming together for/because of Josh. Wow! I kinda felt like an outsider, not knowing Josh or being able to relate to all the wonderful stories being told from the stage. But it was a beautiful night of music. I loved how the artists didn't have "attitude". They backed each other up, shared equipment, kept the flow moving, and performed great. I bought the STG CD for myself and a tee for my friend. I love listening to STG, especially at work. It really calms me down and keeps me from completely losing my mind. Thank you Josh for your music & spirit, everyone involved at the benefit concert and to Julianne. ~~p.s. Happy Belated Birthday Josh!~~

Happy happy birthday....here's a quick birthday message---the good sports in my office have been passing a yellow post-it note around everyday for the last two months that has (in my scrawl) "Building Atlantis by Josh Clayton Felt/WYEP-412-381-9900" written on it...whoever has it last puts it on the computer of someone else the next morning, and they know to call and request the song that day, and then pass the post-it on. The best was our 72-year old receptionist Julia who we overheard calling and asking for them to play "that Felt song by Josh Clayton Atlantis". We about peed ourselves laughing. And yes, they played it! Anyway, hope you're in Atlantis having a birthday laugh of your own. Scott/P

Wow! It seems so ironic that I happened to stroll over to Josh's site just to find out that today is his birthday. It's been a little while since I've listened to STG or anything really. With kids almost out of school for the summer (very scary!), I've mostly been running like mad here and there with no personal time. But this morning we were in the car and I just got the urge to hear Josh, and like it always is, it was so relaxing and just made me feel good and happy to hear. I told my husband, "I feel so lucky to have found Josh!" and I was thinking how I just wished that everyone could have the pleasure of knowing his music. And so, I just felt the desire to check in and see what was going on in Josh's world today online on his site. What a surprise that's it's Josh's birthday. Now, I just really do feel connected to Josh and happy to have been touched by his spirit today on his special day. Happy Birthday Josh and thanks again for the music!

" In every moment we are consciously or unconsciously creating ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Make it something great. If you don't limit what you believe is possible you will find that there are no limits on you as to the beauty and impact of what you can choose to create and be.     I recently found out about Josh's passing and I feel awful. I was a big School of Fish fan early on. I can't remember when I first saw them but it was either in at Hammerjack's in Baltimore or The Fastlanes in Asbury Park, NJ. In fact, I did see them a couple times in Asbury Park. I'm embarrassed to admit it but I was a little infatuated with Josh at the time. Don't get me wrong, I loved the music but he was just so great to watch on stage- the whole band was. I must have seen them a lot because I have a bunch of song lists from the show that I took afterwards. At the time I had been working at a photo lab and really wanted to bring something for Josh to sign at the next show we went to. So I had a picture that I previously took of him with his hair blowing in the wind and I had it put on a plate. The store I worked at would make these plates that kind of were like the commemerative plates that they sell on tv and you could put your kid's picture on it or whatever. Anyway, so I got this plate made of Josh playing guitar. The picture was from their outdoor concert at the World Trade Center in New York. I brought the plate to the next show, which was also at The Fastlanes in Asbury Park, NJ. I don't remember how I got to him but somebody was bringing my friends and I downstairs behind the stage to meet the band. I was such a dork but I showed Josh the plate and he signed it for me. He seemed to get a kick out of it but I'm sure he was more like "what a freak"! Anyway, I just wanted to write this and say that my friends and I had a lot of good times going to the School of Fish shows and being silly listening to their music. I am very saddened to hear about Josh. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. And if Josh is reading all of these notes somewhere, I just want to say thank you.

umm i don't know what to say. i feel like such an ass. i didn't even know he passed away until about five minutes ago. i've been waiting for him to release another album since he released "inarticulate nature boy". i even joined the email list to be kept informed. but as all our lives do, my computer changed, my email changed, my life changed. & the only thing that didn't change was the fact i really felt, in my soul, that Josh was a great artist. & after 12 years in the music industry, i don't throw the word "artist" around very easily. i just can't believe that he has been gone this long & i am just now finding out about it. & not only that, but that there has been more recordings since then. i can't even explain how feel about this. i almost feel deceived, but i can't say who i feel deceived by. i guess i'm to blame for not staying on top of his career/work. i am a music collector. i have alot of things by "school of fish". promos from record companies, singles, vinyl, cd's etc. & i also have an autograph from Josh when he opened for Tori Amos at Kent State here in Ohio. We left half way through Tori's performance because she couldn't touch his performance. He was equiped with a guitar & a feedback speaker & she had a small band & 2 piano's. Don't get me wrong, i am NOT a fan of Tori Amos, but i give her credit as a musician, she was very good. But we were there to see Josh, & he blew her off the stage before she even got on the stage. I went out while she was on to go to the bathroom, & there he was. Josh was over by the t-shirt stand talking to people. I waited patiently just to say hello & give him a "thank you" for his contribution to my life of music. Tori was on stage, but i didn't care. Josh was the one i came to see. After he was done talking, i thanked him for a great show, & he seemed eager to comment on the fact that he was going to go & continue his next album & that he would be back in the area really soon on his own. It was a quick conversation, but one that i always looked back on, because out of all the people i've met as musicians, Josh came across as the one guy that was just one of your friends that happened to be able to play a guitar & make a living at it. He was a REAL person. & that's what i like about his music, lyrics & the day i met him. he did not disappoint me by being bigger than life. he was life. he was just a guy. he was appreciative. he was complimentary. & he was thankful. he signed an autograph for me. it reads "For Tony - Thanks for spreading the word! X josh claytonfelt" ok, so i improvised the ACTUAL signature, because it's a little hard to read, he could have been a doctor based on his autograph! but to this day that cd, that performance, that conversation, that autograph, means as much to me now as it did back then. I still hear the words to "window" in my head some days when i wake up. i just feel completely out of touch because i've been waiting for so long for him to come out with something new since 1995, & now that i see that i've missed the boat by 2 cd's & a live cd, & i'm just NOW finding out that, that poor soul has left this mortal coil, he's moved on & here i am still waiting. wow. well, that's all i have to add to this message board. i don't normally post messages to performers websites. but in Josh's case, i had to do this because if i didn't i would probably regret it. & i'm sure that i'm going cry. I guess i have some shopping to do tomorrow. :) i have to hear the albums he released. thank you very much for letting me post my memories of Josh & his music. & to his friends & family, please let me NOW offer my best wishes to you, 2 years late. but if nothing else, even 2 years later, he is still being thought of because of how he has touched me. & i guess that is something that all artists try to achieve through their art. much love Tony King Elyria Ohio This email address is being protected from spambots.     For many years I have been a fan of Josh's music and didn't even know it. Many years ago, before my husband and I were married, we went to see Crowded House in concert at Lisner Auditorium in Baltimore. I had listened to and enjoyed Crowded House throughout college, when School of Fish opened I felt as though the concert would never start. To my surprise, I became so engrossed in School of Fish's music that I was actually disappointed when their jig was up. We bought our first tape that evening. Later, 3 Strange Days became a big hit, and I am embarrassed to say - I didn’t even know I had the tape. It sounds ridiculous to think I was so clueless, but all I remember when listening to the song was that it reminded me of School of Fish from the concert. Although I have never been a big music buff - Josh's voice and sound stayed with me through the years. Last week I was at Virgin Records with my husband (we've now been married ten years), they were playing Spirit Touches Ground. Once again I was drawn into the music, reminiscent of the sounds of School of Fish. I bought the CD on a whim, brought it home and became fascinated with Josh's voice and his story. After reading the dedication on the inside of the CD, I felt compelled to check out his website. I feel a true since of loss. We bought our first tape ten years ago, and our second last week. I feel saddened that we didn't support Josh while he was living. To his family, know we support him now and are enjoying his music everyday. Thank you.

Just to introduce myself, The first Josh Album I heard was SOF and then INB then STG, They're all very good, my favorite songs are, Kid on the Train and Paint the Tree Green. I'm 13 been listening to his stuff for a couple of years, It's sad he's gone, but his music still lives. I applaude his incredibly high in-tune voice, and expertease of the guitar and many other instruments.

I hung out with Josh when he first signed in the early 90's, and Josh was with the School of Fish. I was friends with Dan Shaheen and he hooked me up with the band. Come to think of it, I did computer work for Dan when he was the School of Fish tour manager. I always thought that Josh was a well together artist and a good person. You could tell he was very very talented and I am saddened to hear of his passing. I hope his soul rests peacefully, cause Josh really was a decent guy.

I just wanted to say thanks (to the powers at be)for the great Spirit Touches Ground sticker that arrived last week. One thing I have always loved about being a Josh and SOF fan is how great it is to get a postcard or some other treat in the mail. It really makes you feel connected as a fan.

As a longtime fan, I have a question to pose to the audience here. Does anyone know what the song "Fountain" is about (School of Fish, Human Cannonball CD, track 4). I have always been curious and would love to know. That aside, I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Josh's passing. I feel lucky to be able to listen to his wonderful music to keep his hard work and creativity alive.

I saw the Fish in Orlando during the late 80's opening for Crowded House. They're bassist had suddenly left in the middle of the tour, yet with the help from Crowded House went on stage and played a memorable set of music! Ran into Josh after the show and congratulated him for a job well done! You are missed, buddy!

I bought Josh's new album the week of its release, and it has only left a CD player long enough to take it from the car to the house. This CD really speaks to me. I remember a long time ago when Josh had a small snippet of "Building Atlantis" posted on his site. I listened to the brief clip over and over and thought, "This is a hit", no kidding. I was going to write Josh about it and beg him to release it, but you know how time flies... I never got around to it. I was really pleased to hear Raina say that Josh said, "This is gonna be my hit single." Josh, you were right on, brother, and you'd be pleased to know that the *whole album* is a hit... A pure masterpiece. Paul

I left a message a while back, the morning I saw on GMA the Josh had died. What a shock! I thank GMA for airing that. Or I may have never been reintroduced to Josh's music. I meet Josh for a brief moment before a concert when he was with, School of Fish. Josh and his band were just standing in front of the concert hall. That was so awesome that they were such a personable band and meeting their fans. He took the time to talk with me and shake my hand. ( I remember thinking at the time, I will never wash my hand again...lol ) I looked into those eyes and I just knew he was a very special person. That was when I was 21, I am now 32. As School of Fish stepped out of the spot light and I started having a family, I forgot about the band. A yr. or two ago, I thought about Josh and his voice, a voice that speaks to your soul when you listen to it. I wondered what ever became of him. Then one morning I see Josh's face on my TV. I jumped out of my chair, my husband thought I was crazy... Then my excitement turned to sadness as I found out he had passed on. Because of GMA, I was able to find this web sight and purchase more of his music. I must say OMG! I am in love with him all over again! His voice is so powerful, so beautiful. I thank God he shared this man's voice with all of us before taking him away. You know some one can sing when he plays acoustic, ( with no drums, back up singers, electronics ) and sounds awesome. I think if I had to pick, Dragon Fly, Waiting to be and To cool for this world, are my favorite songs. But it changes weekly since all of them are so good. To Josh's family and friends: I am so sorry for your loss. I am hugging my little 6 month old son very closely right now, I don't want to miss any thing from my beautiful kids. Because life can be very short.. PS Thank you for making sure his music still made it out to all of his fans! Linda

I special ordered Spirit Touches Ground after hearing Josh's story on Good Morning America. I just knew I had to have it. I feel a true connection to Josh through his music. His words and melodies are haunting me. I hear them when I work, when I wake in the morning and during those time I lay awake at night. These are some of the most soothing and grounding songs I have ever heard. This is truly a masterpiece. Everone should be very proud. And to Josh: I hear you man! your words have effected my life. Thanks.

It was January 18th when the radio jock on 106.7 KROQ announced that a lead singer of a band called School Fish had died of testicular cancer. The news was followed by a song called "Three-Strange-Days," aired in the early 90's. After hearing it for the first time, I wanted to buy the album that came with that song. I was so moved by such an intricate, unique, and innovative voice and rift, I knew that the singer was very talented.(Fortunately, napster was still alive back then)Along the way, I found that "Rose colored glasses" was on the Point-Break soundtrack, and finally when I had the album "School of Fish," I listened to it almost religiously. Every song had a definition and a part to play in my life. Joshua's voice was like a calling, a brotherly comiseration of all the problems and issues I faced, most likely because he faced the very same problems like I did. Although he's gone,as long as there is music, emotion, and life, he will live forever. -Max

This is really weird. I haven't ever written a letter on a website before, but feel compelled to share now. I just happened upon the fact that Josh is no longer with us and was shocked. He has had a strange impact on my life such that I have to tell the story. I worked in the music industry for quite a while and ended up receiving Josh's Inarticulate Nature Boy album as a promo from a record label rep. I didn't know who he was and filed the CD away. By chance I listened to it one day and fell in love with it. I copied it to tape since I didn't have a CD player in my car at the time. I later moved to LA and was interviewing for a job at a music management company. During the interview, I was asked what music I liked. I replied that my tastes were VERY eclectic. They asked me what was in my car sterio at that time. I told them it was a tape I had made with Subdudes on one side and guy they probably hadn't heard of names Josh Clayton-Felt. Well, they all looked at eachother rather strangely and then asked if I knew that he was one of their clients. I had no idea!! needless to say, I got the job! anyway, had to share my connection with Josh. Never actually met him, but did speak with him on the phone a couple of times. What a loss... Thanks for listening Kia

So where was I eight weeks ago? Living my life, raising my children, trying to write a book when I leafed through the Sunday Calendar section of the LA Times and saw the article on Josh. It wasn't much, just a single column with a picture of him and his dog, but something about it grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. Maybe it was the School of Fish songs that I vaguely remembered, maybe it was the shared interest in Native American culture, or maybe it was his eyes that resonated such warmth, but I tore the article out and stuck it with my book research. A few weeks later I came across it and picked up Spirit Touches Ground at my local Wherehouse. Needless to say I was amazed. Josh's voice was perfect to my ear, edgy and full-bodied without being overly sweet. I was immediately hooked. I have since found two School of Fish CD's used (the music is still so fresh 10+ years later), and I bought Felt Like Making A Live Record (a close 2nd favorite to STG) and Beautiful Nowhere on-line ($10 each from CD Baby - what a deal!) Both are great! I sent e-mails to many friends trying to promote STG and reconnected with a friend who had Inarticulate Nature Boy. I am now musically set if I ever find myself on a desert island. - Josh's music has been a huge influence on me, and I can tell from the other messages here that I am not alone. His songs have become the score to my writing. It is hard to remember what music I was even listening to eight weeks ago. Thank you to Josh's family and friends and to Dreamworks for doing so much to get his songs to us and for supporting this site. Thank you, Josh, for making the music.

No one was able to put me on the right track and I thought I'd lost my chance to hear more of Josh's music. Today, I was paging through one of my many notebooks and there on one of the insides covers was Josh's name. I can't wait to go and get the cd. Runar also recently visited a new preschool and was putting together a puzzle of insects and told his prospective teacher that she could "let the dragonfly come and give her a ride" if she wanted...     I saw the GMA w/Josh several weeks ago and went out the next day to purchase the new CD. Something compelled me. I work at home, but don't usually watch the television while I work. That morning I had been watching the local news and just didn't turn it off. I got up from my office chair - the TV being in a different room - for some reason just as they began to talk of Josh. After listening to the CD over and over (and over and over), I realize Josh has a way of speaking to a listener that I could only dream of (being a singer/songwriter myself). I decided earlier this year to go on a Vision Quest because I have been searching for ... I'm not sure what. I feel like there have been reasons for everything in my life since that time - and this is one of those things. What a loss for the world of music, but a wonderful bonus for the spirit world. May his spirit live in all of us.

During the summer of 1999 I was at Camp Winnebego in Maine at the post camp week after all the boys leave and families and friends of the camp owners come for a vist. During that time Josh was there. He was there with Henry. At the time I was rehearsing Our Town and I was playing Emily. I remember Josh approaching me on the shore of Echo Lake while I was rehearsing my lines. We got to chatting and sharing about performing and being artists. I remember expressing to him the line in the play that I thought was most potent and most beautiful "Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it--every, every minute?" He seemed like someone who was doing that. He was alive! When he shared his songs with us they were ALIVE, and he was immensely present. Though I only knew him for that week, when I heard of his passing it touched me in a very profound way. I just went to Tower Records last week and bought Spirit Touches Ground. I am so thankful to have his gift. He is indeed, an angel who touched down to show us how to live, even if he was in our lives for only just a minute. Peace..Heidi

Hi. I'm not sure who to address this to...so I guess I'll just write and whoever feels like this is intended for you can comment on the message board or send me an e-mail. I had been reading old messages on the board and saw a recent one that talked about the attempts for funding for the Decendants fo the Earth project. I re-read the letter that Josh had written about his experience with this community and was touched by much it meant to him. I also have a great respect for the Earth and the Native American ways, which are actually timeless ways. So, I guess my question is that the message re: the Decendants of the Earth sounded like they were definitely in a financial crossroad and that there was a time limit to resolve it. Was the financial goal met? and if not, is it to late to help? And so, what could I do? Thanks! Alisa

I recently found out about Josh's passing and, even though I never got the chance to meet him, was extremely saddened to hear the news. Many, many years ago, I had the opportunity to see him perform in San Francisco with School of Fish. Shortly before the show, the band's tour manager told the drummer that one of his parents has passed. I remember standing there wanting to say something to him but not knowing what. The band decided to continue with the show. I think it was that incident that made Josh's voice sounded different to me. The show took on such a sad feeling to me because of the drummer's situation, that I listened to the music differently. I still listen to my School of Fish albums and think about that night. I hear the lyrics and the cracks in Josh's voice. Even writing this makes me teary eyed. Since getting the latest CD and hearing about his death, I have had an overwhelming desire to send the family my condolences. I'm glad you were able to have the time you did with Josh. Thank you for sharing him with the rest of us. Sincerely, Jessica

About a week ago, we were driving down the road and I put on Josh's CD. "No, not that again", my son sighed, knowing how smitten I've become with the music. I played it anyhow. It was into the second or third song and I glanced over at my son. He'd put his gameboy away and was just singing along, enjoying the music in spite of his intentions not to. And that's how Josh's music just reaches out, grabs you and brings you joy. I too am glad that the music was finally "freed" and is being made known to the people and I'm hoping that the word does spread like wildfire and more and more people can be privy to Josh's talents to enjoy the pleasure of his melodies. Thanks to his family for their fortitude and thanks to Josh for creating and sharing his artistry with us.

I just wanted to say that my prayers are with Josh's family. I had seen him open for Tori Amos about 5 or 6 years ago. His performance was powerful, energetic and over all surprising. I immediately bought his CD. I have not been a faithful follower but I do remember what kind of an effect he had on me through his music. Honestly I want to Thank Josh for his giving of himself to the world. I am proud to know of his music. Love and prayers to his family and friends.

Jonathan Mohr (mr_mohrmusic@hotmail):
I was listening to KCRW in the car this afternoon and a song was playing. After it finished the DJ announced that it was Josh Clayton-Felt. I told my wife, I know him, I wonder how he's doing. The last time I saw him was at the Hollywood Farmer's market on a Sunday (near Hollywood and Vine). I was playing bass on the street with a jazz band. We said hello and he gave me his phone number, I sort of hoped I'd get a chance to play music with him some day. I don't know his music. I just knew that he was a nice guy who had been recording his music. I was glad for him that he was having some success but I never found out more about his music until today. I have often thought about him and wondered how he was doing. I had no idea that he had gotten sick and passed away. It sort of freaked me out when the DJ announced that the recording I'd heard was from the late Josh Clayton-Felt. I had a very brief moment with Josh. I met him in Malibu at the sweat lodge a couple of weaks prior to my going on a four day vision quest, I think it was April of 1997. We got to sweat and pray together. When I went on my vision quest, many people in the community were invited to come help support the people who were going to fast and pray for a vision. When I arrived in the mountains above Ojai, I still had a lot of work to do to prepare for my vision quest. Wolf and Lisa helped us find "helpers" to take the pressure off during the last hours of preparation. Josh volunteered to be my helper. He stayed with me the night before I set out and did anything that needed to be done. He carried things, held my eagle feather as I learned to tie the mother of pearl button onto it the correct way. We didn't talk much, he was just there, humble and helpful. Four days later, when I returned from praying in the mountains, he was still there. He had been helping the community while the vision questers were in the mountains. Wolf instructed us to divide into groups to share our insights from our experiences the previous four days and nights with those who had stayed behind at the camp in support of us. Josh was in my circle that day. Later, there was a feast and gifts were exchanged. I had an extra mother of pearl button and I gave it to Josh to have if he decided to go on his own vision quest sometime in the future. He seemed sincerely touched by it. I sort of dropped out of the sweat lodge community not long after that experience. I often wondered how Josh was and how his new recording was developing. It was many months later when, stoned out of my mind, I opened my eyes after playing a set of music in the hot sun on the streets of Hollywood, and saw Josh standing there in front of me. He had been listening for a while. I put my bass down and visited with him. I felt a little guilty that I had been away from the sweat lodge for so long and that I was totally stoned. The feeling passed. We exchanged numbers. He hadn't been to the lodge in a while either. It was good to see you, Josh. I am saddened that I'll never get a chance to see you again in this life.

In 1996 when I first began music journalism I had the opportunity to interview Josh. I remember him being very kind, and never wanting to speak ill of anyone. Although it was a telephone interview, his genuine nature prevailed and I've never forgotten him. I don't know how it happened that I missed the news of his passing in 2000, but this week when I received "Spirit Touches Ground" and learned what happened, I felt a very big loss... not only in terms of music, but that the world is missing one more beautiful soul. As I listen to "Spirit Touches Ground" I hope that I will learn to live my life to the fullest each day as Josh did. And for those of you who never got to speak with him, know that the kindness he exuded was genuine. He will certainly be missed.

The CD is beautiul and inspiring. I'm sorry that I didn't know his music sooner. The songs are beautiful. The last song, Dragonfly, is the perfect way to end this CD. I hope that many will find this CD so his music will live on through the ages. Again I'm sorry I didn't find his music sooner, but at least I am aware of this CD. I thank Josh for his gift of music and proving that real music from the heart still exists today.

Hey Josh, I just had another good cry. The first was in India when Linda emailed me to say you had died. I quit smoking the next day. The next time, when I saw your folks again at our 15th reunion, and I could feel their sorrow and longing, and it transferred to me. Your mom gave the most beautiful, loving, spontaneous acceptence speech for that award. And now, as I sit here at my desk in New Orleans, trying to write a book and I can't seem to make the words come flowing through, and you're singing "Waiting to be" and it's hitting home and I am crying and feeling grateful for the support and the reminder. Thank you Josh. Thanks for your parting gift to us all. You always had the right energy for making people feel good. I'm glad our paths crossed my friend -- and perhaps I'll run into you on the other side. Erik

Thank you, Josh, and thank you, Josh's family and friends. I read a glowing review of STG on a web log a few weeks ago and began listening to it online pretty often. I was delighted (and somewhat surprised) when I found a copy of it in Border's last week and I couldn't pass it up. IT IS PERFECT. Really. "Too Cool For This World" and "Waiting To Be" are my favorites but it's one of those albums that is excellent and meaningful from start to finish. Thanks again. Sara

I met Josh at the USIW(Universal Society of the Integral Way) annual retreat in Goleta, CA in Sept, 1997. At that time I had never heard of him or his music. I was the MC for the Saturday evening entertainment portion of the retreat. This consisted of music, juggling, comedy, and other amusements. Towards the end of the evening I asked if anybody else would like to come up and be entertaining. Josh came up and asked if he could borrow my guitar and play a song. As he looked out at us (about 80 people), he told us he was nervous even though he said he was used to playing in front of much larger crowds. Then he proceeded to tell us about a trip he had taken(to Ireland, I believe) where he observed a kid on a train. And then he played the song. Towards the end of the song he invited us to sing a long to the chorus, and 80 happy people were singing, "There's a kid on the train, there's a kid on the train". Josh made a lot of friends and fans that night. I'm just one of them. Sincerely, Neil Malley

I saw a story on Josh on either MTV, MTV2, or VH1 (not really sure which one) and I was intrigued. I bought "Spirit Touches Ground". The very day I listened to it, I became an instant fan. I am a very lyrics-orientated person and Josh certainly fits the bill. (Normally I listen mostly to the Counting Crows.) I just went on CD baby and ordered his other 2 CDs they had in stock and asked about the 3rd. I am very saddened for the world's loss of Josh Clayton-Felt. I would've have made every effort to follow his career and see live performances. I hope, at the very least, the word gets around and more people get to experience the talents of this man who was definately too cool for this world. I will do my part in spreading the word. I will miss hearing new music in the future. I do look forward to future postings on this web site. Thank you to whomever made the efforts to finally get this last CD released. In dealing through your pain and sorrows, you have given us a very precious gift. Thank you.

In the mid 90s, I was the Music Director and Station Manager of the college radio station at Arizona State. School of Fish was on tour supporting Human Cannonball, and they came to the station for an on-air interview. Later that night after the concert, I pointed to Sun Devil Stadium and mentioned to Josh that someday they'd be playing there. (Sun Devil Stadium seats 70,000+ and is the featured stadium in the U2 documentary "Rattle 'n' Hum.") Josh just laughed as if he wasn't interested in playing there. I didn't understand it at the time, but I do now. I just found out today about his death. I didn't even know about his solo career. Thanks to CDNow, they featured "Spirit Touches Ground" as a new release this week. I hope I still have the interview I did with School of Fish in '94 or '95 on tape. I will look for it tonight. In the meantime, if you missed the Good Morning America story, you can read the transcript at: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/GoodMorningAmerica/GMA020212_JoshClayton.html Like Josh said, "For all my relations..." -Brent

I bought my copy of STG today, after lots of virtual listening online. It has become my favorite CD and I think I almost know all the words already. I was glad that the recording was nice and clear and clean, better than what I could hear with my computer speakers. I also emailed my local radio station and asked if they would play the CD so others can know about this great music. Others should do the same with their local stations. I know if people were aware of it, many would love to purchase it. All the songs are really melodic and interesting. Josh really was so talented and I am grateful to have discovered his music! I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to access the lyrics? I'd hoped they would have been included with the CD. I was thinking it said to check this site online for the lyrics, but don't see them in the topics. Maybe I've just overlooked them...

This will be the first time I have dropped a note since my friend Josh has moved on to grace a different place. I am most thankful for being able to spend quality time with him as we both traveled down the highways of America. I came to love and respect the man as he showed me a part of my life I never knew exsisted. I became a much more sensitive and rounded person for having known JCF.I was going through problems of my own when I was told of his passing and suddenly ny issues were non exsistant. My biggest regret was not having enough time to come and pay my respect with the rest of his friends and family. I felt close to Josh and has spoken with him only a few months prior. I had no idea. That was the hardest thing to deal with the sudden impact of it all. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him and how he touched my life both with music and his inner self. To all his friends and family please forgive me for not being there for support at a time that was most important. This much you should know for sure : I loved Josh and he was a beautiful and talented human being.

you've been in my dreams the last two nights josh. i just came across some pictures we took together. i also found something i wrote two years ago- which kind of helps me since it has been so bittersweet this past week........ Paradise beckons it's beautiful son... the tears that are falling from the earth are being gathered together and sprinkled over heaven making purple flowers bloom...preparing for the arrival of a new angel. as the sun beams-rainbows appear leaving a path for him to follow. I'm sure it is all familiar to him-his heart and soul have long embraced this place-his music tells us so. His inner light was as bright as any star in the sky-it enveloped his heart and made it sing. Joy -hope- love for those whose path he crossed. It is clear that his footprints of many colors are gifts to be cherished. Our friend is free. At peace... he is positioned high in the sky. His spirit soars...he joins the angels-no longer needing to fly on the wings of a dragonfly...for now his own strong wings are open wide taking him to places where everything is beautiful and safe. How lucky we were to have him on earth...how lucky heaven is today.

This message is simple and time sensitive and urgent and simple. There is a chance to achieve two of Josh's dreams in the same few weeks. His music is getting out there and I encourage everyone to share it, it sold on Amazon.com between Dave Matthews and Shrek - awesome. And those proceeds are going to some great causes that are on a national scale. In the meantime, Josh's prayer that the DESCENDANTS of the EARTH find a land base to continue their teachings of the Native American Way is here, now- actually, right now. They must make Escrow by the 25th - and some funding has fallen through. so here's the deal - I urge you, read Josh's letter about them under "Words from Josh", then send a tax deductible donation ASAP to D.O.E., Box 301, Ventura, CA 93002...it is tax deductible and a beautiful thing to do.     As with many of the messages I've read in the archives, I loved School of Fish but somehow got caught up in the hustle and bustle of what I was told was "life" and left the band behind, with so many other things of importance. I only wish I'd begun rediscovering Josh's music earlier. Catching up now is joyful sadness, if you know what I mean. In a few turns of the wheel, perhaps "catching up" with Josh will be a bit more literal, although he's way ahead of me in the dharma department. Namasté!

I was deeply saddened to know that an artist that I had admired since my early days of college (1991) had passed away so suddenly. I too learned of Josh's untimely passing as many of us did from "The Good Morning America" show and it broke my heart. In our busy life we seem to lose contact and touch with friends, family, and persons that remind us of better days. Josh's music is one of those things in my life that lets me know I've had better days. I still smile like a child when I hear some of his old tunes on the radio. It gives me comfort to know that while I was busy in my own life, he was stayed devoted to his music through out the ups and downs he faced. Josh's last album will stand as testament to a soul that was "too cool for this world". God Bless him, his family, and friends. And thank you for releasing his album posthumously.-CB

It seems whenever i hear about Josh and/or listen to his music i feel both great joy and saddness at the same time. When i finally heard that he passed away, the middle of last year, all i could do was cry. I was upset that such an amazing artist would never be able to put anymore of themselves out there. Also i was upset for a selfish reason too, that i would never be able to hear anymore music from him. He touched me with out me ever being able to meet him and tell him what his music has done for me. But hopefully he knows that he was special to so many people. I feel very privaledged to be able to hear his last recordings though. He seemed like a sweet sweet man that had many tresures and i feel blessed to be able to experience a small part of him.     well, as fate would have it, I was just standing in the music store on my daughters birthday...(2-12) and a dear friend came up to say hello...which detained me in this particular section of music...when she reached for her selection ...I saw Josh's CD and the flood of energy is inexplicable....I clutched it immediatley and thanked her for detaining me...asked the clerk how long it had been released and she said.."that just came out today ..." so, my daughter's 11th birthday was spent...rather warmly, with Josh Clayton-Felt..wonderful music and a few tears...Dragonfly, I can not make it through yet without crying...and I love backwards world ...had to listen to that twice ...once in the car and continued on into the house. I'm only sad now that I missed all these promotional things everyone is writing about...nevertheless, I actually kind of like the way IT found me. Thank you Josh for filling my ears with wonderful sound and my body with tingling energy.."It you want to get through to the otherside let the dragonfly...come and give you a ride...." funny thing, as coincidence would have it ...right after my cd purchase we had dinner and the light above our table happened to be none other than a green dragonfly stained glass...everything is so beautifully connected in this world and I am so glad Josh made such realizations before he left this planet....and I am glad that he can touch my life through his music while I am still on it...

Hi, I live on the island of Aruba, and when I heard part of a song played on GMA yesterday morning, I was moved by it. The piece they did on Josh's story, music career, and the way he was portrayed by the people who loved him, made me think a lot about what life is all about. It's a shame, he is not here with us anymore, as he would have been a great artist. Today, I will go and let some CD-places order his CD for me, as I would want to hear him more and more. I know he will be greatly missed, but I am also sure that his memory will live on, through his music.

"kid on the train " is on. i remember when you were telling me the story about this song-it doesn't seem that long ago that we were in that amazing house in ireland sitting there with three layers of clothes on because it was so cold & you were sitting in front of the fireplace playing your guitar & singing, what are now some of the songs on "spirit touches ground." i am so overwhelmed by this day. you are a constant inspiration and will be forever...i am so happy that the world will now get to share and experience the amazing gift that all of your friends & family have been blessed with-you & your extraordinary music...you are a "shining star".... "your song "spirit touches ground" just came on- i need to go crank it up & rock out! love you...

My mother saw the GMA show. She called me as she usually does when she finds something interesting. I am touched by all these peoples responses. This is a great person and this shows that everyone can touch peoples hearts. People just need to start living everyday with a smile and a different color each day. I lost a very special girl named Megans Sims in September of 2000. She had such a beautiful soul with an amazing musical talent. Her soul crystal is very bright and I can see that Josh's is too. I know they have met in another place. Notice and Love Everyone and make sure your soul crystals glow brightly. Peace and Love to Everyone, Adam

Oops, sorry to GMA for confusing them with the Today show. I read some of the comments after making mine and it was interesting to see that others noticed the similarity in Josh's music with the sound of Lennon. It is a very poetic music, with nice lyrics and melodies.

I saw Josh's story this morning on GMA. Years ago, when I was still an L.A. scenester I was in a club with my friend Janet Thompson, also an L.A. scenester. She left me for a few minutes to greet a friend. Upon her return she said she was just talking to JCF (at the time he was still with School of Fish). Janet remarked to me at the time that Josh was the sweetest, nicest guy she ever met and was so sincere in her remarks that the moment stuck with me all these years. Has a stranger's death ever effected you in a way you could never anticipate? Yes. I know this to be true because Josh's death effected me in a surprising way. When I heard of his passing I thought "there goes one of the nicest, sweetest guys" and I was truly saddened. And to think that these traits were attributed to him years before his death. To me that means he must have truly been one of the nicest, sweetest guys. My heart goes out to all that loved him and embraced his music. Even though I did not know him personally, I loved his music and truly believe that he was the "nicest and sweetest guy." His music proves it. Peace.

I check josh's site every few days or so, mostly to read other people's comments about him and his music. knowing today is the day that spirit does indeed touch ground, I figured there would be a select few comments posted by the hardcore fans who went out and bought the album this morning. but HOLY COW I am blown away by all the people who saw GMA and decided to post here! unfortunately, I didn't find out about the segment until I arrived here. as I sit here and read all the AWESOME comments my eyes are watering up. I'm floored! it's like I've dreamt this all before, hoping someday that it would come true: that if mass quantities of people were exposed to his music, magic would happen! it seems that everyone who is touched by his story is also equally touched by his music. that is the most awesome thing! for those of you looking to find some of his live music, please check the "order CDs" section to get "felt like making a live record". that is probably the best live album I've ever heard. and if any of you have doubts about spirit touches ground...just go buy it! all your doubts will disappear! every single song on it is incredible! anyone, feel free to email me if you want to chat about josh's music. I'm always open for a discussion : ) ps, whatever happened to the inarticulate discussion emailing list? we need that back! pps, I am going to email GMA and let them know to check out this message board so they're aware of how many people josh's story touched.

Well, I am not surprised that Josh's story has affected so many "strangers"...actually, the truth is, I am blown away. I was so afraid the album would come out and only the devoted few (thousand) would know about it. Josh is my very oldest and best friend and we were like brothers...and none of you are "strangers" anymore. I want everyone to know that a portion of Josh's record sales will be going to the Nature Conservancy and Save the Music, two beautiful organizations that speak to Josh's spirit...I have sooo much more to say...thank you so much, buddy...there is so much love because of you, Josh...oh, yeah, and what percentage of people writing in are women!?! The charismatic curly-haired guy still can charm 'em. Buy the record, support the message and the music...he never cared about the money he just wanted people to smile more and be kind. And get ready for the JCF Memorial Benefit Concert supporting the Descendants of the Earth coming this April. Love to all....Jeffy.....

I was among the many people to see the story on GMA this morning. The song that they played as his "hit single" gave me incredible chills. From just the small amount they played of that song, I was hooked. It's amazing to me that a man that was on the earth for such a small amount of time, was able to express what his soul sang so wonderfully. I wish I had known about him sooner. My heart and prayers and thoughts go out to the parents, friends and family who were lucky enough to know this soul while he was with us here on earth. In a small amount of humor, perhaps now that he's up there in Heaven, God will let him play the music as you enter the gates, eh? Much love to you all! I plan on buying the cd today. And I agree, if there are any live recordings out there from concerts he played or of that nature, I would be one to buy that as well! *hugz!* -Jess

I happened to catch GMA this morning, and couldn't leave for work until the piece was finished. It was a blast from the past -- I went to Brown at the same time as Josh. As a freshman, I remember seeing him and thinking that he was cute. I was crushed to hear he had left school in sophomore year to pursue his music. Over the years, I heard he was in the band School of Fish. I always wondered what happened to him. I was amazingly saddened to hear about his death, even though I did not know him at all. It was inspirational to see that he pursued his love of music, and I am happy for him that he was surrounded by people who loved him when he passed on.     I saw Josh's story on "Good Morning America". Being a writer and a music fan, I was inspired, filled with admiration... moved. Also, experiencing the recent death of a close friend- I have no end of sympathy for all who knew him. I know I will be owning "Spirit Touches Ground" very soon- and the three others if I can get my hands on them. As I do with any musician I like, I will do my best to make people know of Josh's amazing story, and to make his music heard. You must feel so honored to have known him. Thank you.

I watched the segment on Good Morning American about Josh and his music today. I was inspired to go to the website and listen to segments of the whole CD being released today. I have always loved music and have encouraged this love of music in my two sons by involving them in music lessons. I, too, have a son who plays guitar and a son who plays piano. It always touches my heart to see them practicing because music is a great way to express yourself. I forwarded the website information on to my son, Brandon, who also plays guitar and is studying architecture at a university in our home state and to his friend Aaron who is like my second son. I am sure they will be inspired. I am planning to purchase the CD and, even though Josh's life on earth has ended, through the music he has left, he will live on forever. I pray that God will continue to bless Josh's family and friends. Sincerely, Kim Henneke-Singer

I just saw the morning show about Josh. I have two young sons, and want to pass along to Josh's mother how apparent it is to all what a wonderful job you did raising your son. That he had so much love that he was ready to give back is testimony of how much he was given. You can hear in his voice how loved he felt. "Dragonfly" is an example, one of many. Watching Josh's girlfriend, how her face lit up as she spoke about him, she spoke with such strength and intelligence. They were lucky to have found each other. I have the firm belief that the future of humanity depends on men finding a way to open the door to sensitivity and expression. I think Josh's family, friends and fans would all agree that indeed, Josh's "Spirit Touches Ground."

I was sadden this morning when I was watching GMA to have found out Josh died. When I was 21, I went and saw School of Fish in concert. The band was just hanging out in front of the concert hall( we arrived early ) To my surprise I was able to meet him and shake his hand, He was so nice. It was truly an honor to met him. Their music was a big part of my early 20s. I still play their tape, my favorite song was "Three strange days", ( All of them were great though ). I had always wondered what happened to him. So when I found out this morning that he pasted on, I was heart sick. I am thankful he left behind more music, and I will go out and by it. His voice was truly a gift from god! I am so sorry to his family for their loss...Linda

Pushing 50 it refreshing to hear music reminiscing the later 60s with a smooth but dynamic sound. Only the good die young seems to be a phrase that fits. My heart felt prayers go out to his family and friends. THE ROAD GOES ON FOREVER AND THE PARTY NEVER ENDS...............

I just heard of Josh today on GMA and wished I'd heard of him earlier. What a talent! I then went to his website and was amazed by it. Anyone who knew him was obviously truly lucky and blessed. My hats off to his parents too, you raised a fine young man. Thank you for sharing his music. I'm off to get the cd now!

I just heard Josh's story on Good Morning America. It touched my heart....It's sad that he didn't receive support from the record companies earlier, before his illness. I myself was diagnosed with cancer in 2000, but after surgery and chemo I'm happy to say I'm in remission. After listening to the clips of the cd, I'm going to go out and buy several copies for my family and friends....

I got to know Josh a bit when he was living in Boston and he left a strong impression on me. I guess it was in '98. My friend was playing bass for him and I went to see the show. I must admit I was a little skeptical because I wasn't a huge School of Fish fan. I immediately connected to his new music. Josh was doing a residency at a small club and ended up going each week (an acoustic project I had going opened one of the shows). Josh really did have a mysterious charisma. For awhile I had a dub of his non released record that included some of the songs from "Sprit." I really loved the tunes. The last time I saw Josh my band was on tour in LA and I ran into him at "White Trash Wins Lotto." He was really full of energy for the new recordings he had just finished (I've been excited to hear them ever since). I asked if he wanted to come out and see one of my band's show the next two nights. He said, "yes, definitely, but I have to go to the doctor tomorrow. My back has really been bothering me." That was the last I ever spoke with him. Thanks to whoever is keeping Josh's music alive because he was a really special person.

Josh, You don't know me, but I'm a friend of Sam's. And just recently I became quite a fan of yours. Over the past year or so, I've heard stories and seen pictures. He loves you very much, and sometimes it's hard for him when I ask questions. Other times the stories come easily, follwed by "this is one of my favorites" or "I was there when he recorded this" and your wonderfully sweet voice. I met several of your friends yesterday at a release party for "Spirit Touches Ground." You left quite a mark on some truly good people. I played with Kaya for a while. That sweet, sweet doggie gets love at every turn. It was a perfect day, and the sun shone so warmly the whole time. I wore a skirt for the first time this year, which pleased me. People exchanged memory after memory. I tell you, the celebration of you is a thing of dreams. Jeff with the broken leg asked if it was weird for me to be there, at a party for a guy I never knew. But it wasn't. Sam has done you justice, and it's easy to care about you and your music with the portrait he's painted. He cut a video from photos and old footage of you. I think it's wonderful, although he feels strange about it. It's fun for me to finally see you singing your songs. I have to tell you, I love the album. And I love the trumpet on "Backwards World." It's so sweetly hopeful, with a bit of melancholy for things known. I'm always begging friends of mine to put horns in some of their songs. And your lyrics are fantastic. I'm having such a time singing along and rewinding and singing along some more. You understood it the way few people do. I'm doing what I can to help your family and friends spread the word about the album. Hopefully I can help. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you, as I'm certain I would have liked you a lot. But it's no secret that the world would be a different place were you still here. You remind me of some dear friends of mine. The friends I cling to because they remind me of where I came from and who I am. I think you do that for some of the folks I met yesterday. Back at Sam's apartment, I told him that he's friends with good people. In one of his rare sentimental moments, he smiled to himself, then at me and said "I know." Everyone seems certain that you'd be pleased with the way things are working out, and I hope so. They love you, and it's such a wonderful thing to see. I'm glad to have shared yesterday afternoon with it. I suppose I'll meet you one day. Until then, I thank you for the music. Your friend, Colleen

I was lucky enough to play bass with Josh in a band called "The Boon" when he had just moved to L.A. I was saddened to hear of his passing. I prefer to cerebrate his music rather than mourn him. I received an advance CD of "Spirit Touches Ground" recently and the songs are some of his best work. I was especially moved by his ballads, "Too Cool for This World", "Half Life", & "Already Gone." I thought these songs were written by Josh after learning of his terminal condition even though they probably were not. The STG CD has so much heart and love that I've played it every day and it makes me feel better. In any case he was one of the best songwriters I've worked with. He always did the kind of music he wanted to do, rather than chase whatever music was trendy. Anyway I wanted Josh's fan club leader and family to know that I have 2 tapes by Josh. One is a studio demo with "The Boon" and the other is a solo acoustic performance he taped for me so I could come up with bass lines for his songs. I you would like to make the tapes available to the above listed people. It contain song that were on none of his studio recording. He was a talented songwriter and his music will live on forever.

I was introduced to Josh while he did a little tour with Tori. He made a comment about not being able to afford to bring a band with him on tour. I was blown away by his talent un-plugged....so much that I bought his cd at the end of the concert. I took it home and played it. WOW! His genius with instruments was the more impressive. I flipped through the lyrics and fell in-love. Unfortunately that was the only cd I knew was available. I've played Inarticulate Nature Boy for friends over the last few years...and all have come to really enjoy his music. I still have the same cd I bought that night. Josh's music still carries this girl through her days. I'm sorry he left this world so soon, but he shared a greatness with me and I'll never forget it.

I had the honor of meeting Josh when I was maybe 16. His band School Of Fish opened for the divinyl's at Rocky Point (an amusement park in Rhode Island). To this day I have loved that band not thinking that he had passed on I feel like a peice of me that I had forgotten about is now lost. I never imagined that he had left us. I can see his smile and I can remember exactly how I felt talking to him. He was beautiful to me and he didn't treat me like a child even though I was. I can still hear him singing Father Figure, I think my heart is really sad but at least I can stil hear his music and remember him doing what he did best. I am sorry that he left so early and he will be missed. I feel I have to go home to get my tapes since I left them at my Mom's when I moved out. I still have the t shirt that the band signed and now I am so glad that I kept it. He will truly be missed and if my friends didn't know him before I will make sure they wil now. I just wish they could have seen him shine on stage like I got to.

As I was filtering through various websites tonight, I came upon a link about Josh's new album. A huge fan of Inarticulate Nature Boy, I was shocked and shattered at the news that he has passed. I felt angry with myself for not following his career more closely after seeing him open for Tori Amos in 199?. After hearing him that night, I bought his CD at the show and have listened to it often ever since. My thoughts and hopes are with his family. He was a truly gifted voice and a wonderful soul.

I feel so awful because I grew up with School Of Fish and Actually opened up for them with my old band at Old Clamity Janes in Las Vegas Nevada.I I never heard of them or anything until that night, and I was totally blown away. There was all of about 40 people there, they played with all heart and soul even if front of such a small crowd for such a big place. It was on a weekday that is probably why there was such a small crowd. But all the less I was in Awe of this siple but beautiful real music that was coming my way. It was one of those moments you just savor and never forget. When I heard "Euphoria" it was like it was already in my soul and the same with "Fell" And every other song was just so real and pure I was so amazed. Before the show I got to talk to Josh after they did a sound check we had just pulled up. I just sat and watched there sound check and couldn't believe these guys were playing after us. He was so polite and mellow, and we chatted for about 10 minutes about music. I told him I was very impressed with there sound, it had a distintive sound and very captivating. He just smiled and said thanks with his hands in his pocket kind of shy and playful like a happy kid just wanting to play. You could see that music was in him. I had also talked to Micheal the Guitar palyer who was extremely talented also very cool, and also Dominic the Bassist all nice guys and wonderful musicians. I'm honest and I will say the drummer MP was quite the unpleasant fellow when I was asking about his drum triggering abilities he kind of just looked at me like I was some joke. I couldn't quite equate how he was with these total musicians and had such a bad demeanor. Maybe he had a bad day...... Anyway back to the music and the semi-story. After that soundcheck I called my girlfriend at the time and told her you have to check out these guys. She came down and we fell in love with there music and it was a ritual to listen to it every day. I fell out of touch with the band after the second album all though I still love it. And eventually I moved on in my music life and started with the electronic thing which I do love but I love all music. I still listened to School of Fish years later and turned so many friends on to them. However I had health problems and went through my battle,God willing Im still alive. It's not a fun trip to be sick and fighting for your life I know that, but Im sure Josh had a smile such as I. I was quite shocked to learn only today when I popped in Self Titled Debut Album that Josh had passed on. I was so shocked because I had on the album and looked them up for the first time in about 6 years bad memories from the album....Good and Bad.....You know the feeling of lost love. I geuss I moved on finally in my life and gave it a spin. I was so shocked when I read he passed in 2000, I just started crying and couldn't stop for some reason. I felt so bad but I know Josh is in a better realm, sent away to give more beauty to life. His music was true and real and from the heart. He will be missed greatly by myself and I will think of him more now with a smile.

It is hard to believe so much time has already passed. It's funny how so many of your songs bring back memories of what we experienced over the course of "Inarticulate Nature Boy" and what used to titled "Center of Six". A bit like looking through a photo album. I even pulled out "Alone" recently and, as usual, it never fails to bring on the tears. I miss you Josh. I miss your magic and how when you had a guitar in your hands you connected with something most of us can only dream about. Be well, know that we're all thinking of you regularly and send a little more magic sometime soon, ok? x.TM

I just wanted to say to the friends of Josh and family that I only recently dicovered the news of his death for I have been out of the music seen for quite sometime, until I got on the internet and looked for info on the band. I was a big fan of the School of Fish's two albums. I can't express how much Josh's music has had impact on my life. I play those cd's often to this day since i first discovered them in 1992. It was tragic to discover the loss of such a talented man. Josh was a symbol of the college music era which sadly has been lost. I wll always see SOF as that two album group that I can put in the disc player and forget about things. As a fan of his music I will miss him, but josh will never be forgotten. For every bit of credit that mainstream top 40 groups get-josh should have been given twice that. I just wish that I would have been able to see him perform. Thanks Josh-prayers for the family. Well i stuck in the Human Cannonball Cd today and left it on repeat....What amazing memories i have to all those great tunes. I saw SOF and Josh on his own approx 8 times traveling up and down the east coast to see him starting in 91' when i went to college. I made a cross country trip in 95' and that album didn't leave the cd player the whole trip! The other day the movie Kingpin came on and i forgot that 2 of Josh's songs are in that movie, I almost broke a tear. Is there anything happening in NYC for his record release, i would love to help out.

Josh- Less than one month to the much anticipated (and long-awaited) release of your most beautiful album. I celebrated last night with many lit candles and STG in the background. Each memory brings back so many good and painful memories. The album is such a reflection of your growth in music and in life. We all so sorely miss you and wish it was your live voice out there as the album's launch rolls into its final stages. I went out for a long run today and thought of how much you impacted my life - even just becoming engulfed with life while taking in the untapped natural mountainside (down in OC) in January and the fact that I am finally back doing what I know is want my life is meant to be doing. I am forever thankful for all that you brought, and continue to bring to my life. I am the "contact" in the Orange County (and Big Bear) area and am finally back rolling with things down here. If anyone is interested in helping with the campaign, please feel free to contact me. Lots of love and peace to you, Josh. My thoughts are with you and your family and friends today.

i've been fortunate enough to have an advance copy of "spirit touches ground" for a few weeks now...and i love it! it becomes more beautiful with each listen! so many fond memories come rushing in...my first school of fish show in '91(in the music plus parking lot in redondo beach), when they played on the tennis court at cal poly pomona, new years eve at the hard rock cafe in newport, the last time they performed on gia's request video show in anaheim, seeing josh up there all on his own doing it solo...in portland, oregon. and how after not seeing him for so many years, he was as warm, kind and sincere as ever before, as if no time had past at all. he just was just surprised to me in oregon! well, i love you josh & miss you...and my thoughts are with you always. for all of you that haven't heard "spirit touches ground," you are in for quite a treat! i am partial to the ballads as well, simply because i'm me, but everyone will enjoy it! if anyone out there would like to help with promoting the new album in the sacramento, california area (& surrounding areas)...i'm the girl you should contact! please send me an email, i'd love to hear from you! celebrate your loved ones each day, and cheers to you all! with love, jamie.

Joshie: My body will be in Studio City this morning, but my heart will be in that teepee with so many of your loved ones. I've got a candle burning in the next room, next to that picture of you with the guitar. My thoughts will be with you today, as they are so often. Linda sends her love too. Miss you, amigo. Love, Bobby .

I was lucky enough to get a promo copy of STG. It's really wonderful. And I'm just not saying that because I'm a longtime fan. The album feels familiar and classic all the same. My favorite songs just on a few listens are "Too Cool For This World," "Half Life," and "Deer In the Headlights" -- pretty obvious I like the ballads :)

As I sit here listening to the final master of what is now 'Spirit Touches Ground', the memories are flowing. Our talks about the first demo, listening to it while walking in the park and telling you my favorites. Our plans for Money Penny Management. How proud I felt at 'Fez' as you played your new music to all the good people. This is such a tough time, but I am trying ever so hard to be strong, just as you were. I hold onto the memories - our long talks, endless laughs, your wisdom & advice. Because of you, I know what a true friend is. I look so forward to seeing you again. Hey, do they have rollerblades in heaven? If so, be sure to clear everyone out of the way before I get there. If not, will you teach my how to fly?

I too cannot believe that on February 17 we shall all hear new words, thoughts, and tunes from our dear friend. This album shall be a true emotional release. Here in NYC I walk through Central Park often and am continually moved as I pass by a particular oak tree that Josh and I hung out beneath one great Summer hour after visiting his Grandmother around the block on Park Avenue. Happy New Year to us all!

DEAR FRIENDS OF JOSH. A FEW YEARS AGO I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE JOSH PERFORM, OPENING UP FOR TORI AMOS. I HAD NO IDEA HE WOULD BE PERFORMING UNTIL I ARRIVED AT THE SHOW. THIS WAS A GREAT SURPRISE BECAUSE I REALLY ENJOYED THE SCHOOL OF FISH ALBUMS. IT WAS AN EVEN BIGGER SURPRISE WHEN HE TOOK THE STAGE SOLO. SEEING THAT PERFORMANCE HAD A BIG IMPACT ON ME. I RECENTLY BEGAN PLAYING ON MY OWN WITHOUT A BAND AND HAVING SEEN JOSH DO THE SAME WAS AN INSPIRATION. I WAS ALSO IMPRESSED BY HOW OPEN AND CARING JOSH SEEMED TO BE WITH THE CROWD. MY SYMPATHY IS WITH THOSE WHO LOST SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PERSON. SINCERELY, THOMAS ROUE

Josh was a BHS friend of mine - we were in different bands. I think he would like to see us Brookline rockers still pumping out some loud jams. Well, take a look at www.samuelroach.com and see. Brookline isn't finished, by a long shot. Peace in the New Year, everyone.

January 19th is coming and I've been feeling the need for a special way to remember Josh on the day of his passing-- then I thought that others might also feel this need. Something we can share, wherever we are-- like having pancakes on Josh's birthday. Something that can bind us as a spiritual community for the moment of remembrance. Thinking about this I remembered what Josh would do when he was on tour, to make a motel room feel like home for the night. He would light a candle and burn a small sprig of sage. I know now that sage is burned at the beginning of many native American ceremonies, and I experienced that at the sunrise memorial ceremony held for Josh by his beloved Descendants of the Earth. (See "Words of Josh" to learn more about them.) Josh's dear friend Saverio tells me that going and picking sage with Josh had become a very special moment. "I remember in particular one time… picking the plants when a sweet song was getting sung and hummed as we knew the tradition wanted and somehow, even without knowing the native American traditional sage picking songs, melodies were filling the air of that valley in a perfect balance of light, colors, warmth, and sound." So, I think what I'll do at daybreak on the 19th is light a candle and burn a bit of dried sage. (Hold a small tray under it, I'm told, in case some burning bits drop off.) For those who want to join in, Saverio suggests, "around the same time every one would take a couple of leaves of sage and burn them, keeping silence inside and letting the smell of the sage bring us back to a simple image of a moment shared with Josh, or just letting quietness be the connecting vehicle." A blessed new year to all of you, full of grace, love, and music. Marilyn Josh's Mom
