You know, the world always seemed a brighter place knowing someone like Josh was out there writing music to inspire, lead and move us. The irony is, you don't realize how much so until you think about what it's going to be like without him. Everything seems just that much more drab and empty. We will always have his music. That beautiful voice, the heartfelt words. Truly, he is one of the geniouses of our time. I have never met Josh. I'v only seen him once in a video... yet through the beauty and honesty of his music, I feel like he is an old friend. Now, a lost one. I found of passing only today, and as i read the words my heart sank. With my three year old son next to me, I began to cry and couldn't stop. The connection I have felt to his music has always baffled me. From the first time I heard his voice, I FELT him. Now, I feel the lack of him. But music rages in my head and heart. That kind of connection can only come from pure, kind openness. I know, without even meeting him, that he was a kind person. I'm sure his family will atest that he was a truly wonderous and inspirational human being. I know this to be true. I know it from his music, which bears the proof. While this may seem flowery, especially for someone who never met him, it is nonetheless true. This is not the normal me. Too much emotion. But it wouldn't be right if I didn't give back a little of what josh has given me. To his family: Be assured that he will live on..in his music. I will pass it down to my son and he to his. So I promise you, he will never truly be gone. Good Luck, God Bless and thank you Josh.

I have a sound company in SLC, UT and had the pleasure of working with Josh a couple of times. I remember how star struck and excited I was to meet him for the first time after being such a big fan of school of fish. He was such an amazing song writer and a joy to be around. I am very sorry for his friends and family. I know this must of been an incredible loss. Even I feel so sad and I only spent parts of two days with him. However, with songs as amazing as Josh's, everyone who listend felt close to him and will be able to keep close to him. I will miss him and his song writing very much. Sincerely, Gary.

2/25/00 I was (am) saddened to hear the news of Josh's passing. I never had the honor of meeting him, but I did have the pleasure of his music and seeing SOF twice. I was listening to "Inarticulate Nature Boy" the other day when a friend of mine called me and told me the sad news. Maybe it was a sign or something, who knows. I just wanted to send my condolences to Josh's family, friends and fans. He truly will be missed and always remembered. John Mondlock Chicago, Il.

I was sad to hear the loss of Josh, I remembering hearing 3 strange days, and imediately having to go buy the cd, not realizing that it would be my all time favorite CD. The whole CD is a work of Art. Truely.I always tell everyone I know about School of Fish. Its a shame We lost the band as well as a great Vocalist. I never had the pleasue of meeting Josh or any of the members of SOF,But at least we have that great work of art that Josh was so mush a part of, SOF. I did get the pleasure of seeing ,Micheal Ward with John Hiatte and the Wallflowers. What a great pleasure to see him. I can only imagine what it was like to see SOF,it had to be and incredible experiance. I was hoping somehow SOF would get back together for a reuion but I don't think that could happen now. Peace be with you Josh, and thank you for such a great work of art. I'm sure your feeling a Great "Uphoria",,,, Drummer of That Band in Atlantic Highlands NJ. Steve Paddack

I met Josh briefly at a recording studio in Hollywood. He made an impression. I'm no longer with that studio. The music industry is small and when you're no longer a part, it feels empty and scary. Josh must have felt it at times. Thanks God, the negative feeling doesn't last long. That's because you remember what made you part of the music bizz in the first place -- THE MUSIC! Unfortunately, the system doesn't always recognize or reward talent, as it should. I was honored to be at the Chapling Theater and hear Josh's beautiful recording. Thank you to my friend, Marvin who invited me and all the organizers. This world needs more kind and talented souls like Josh. I want to end on a positive note. But, I am sad. Maybe it's the rain or that time of the month... Maybe it's the world's way of showing us "what really counts." Time is relative. Quality is more important than quantity. In the short time that Josh was on this earth, he made everyone he met aware that life is love, precious, kind, fun, scary, rich, magical, music, and sad... He is remembered. Piece. C

What can be said other than the fact that this world has lost a truly sincere and gifted artist. It shocked me to my very soul to hear of Josh's passing. I was diagnosed with cancer myself at the age of 21 and I can still clearly recall the sudden awareness that no one is immortal. However, Josh has left me with something that is, his music. I had the opportunity to meet Josh and Mike at a Fishbone concert that School of Fish opened for. While the band that opened for SOF played I happened to look next to me, and standing there in the crowd were Josh and Mike. Of course, I immediately introduced myself and told Josh what a big fan of his music I was. Although I was only able to speak to him for a few, short minutes, I was moved by his openness and sincerity. He was a true artist in every sense of the word. He was magic. My prayers go out to his family that they might sense God's peace at this time. We love you Josh.

It's been several weeks since I heard the news about Josh's death, and still don't feel truly ready to express all of my thoughts about Josh. How do you write about someone who was a stranger, yet affected your life in many ways? I met Josh a few years back, when I was working at a radio station in Philadelphia. He was promoting INB, and on Valentine's Day he came to our offices and played a few tunes, live, in the lobby. His music made an incredible impression on me, but even more, I was amazed at the brightness of the soul shining through the music. A few weeks later, the day the cd was released, I saw him open for Del Amitri in Delaware. There, on stage, I again saw the energy and spirit and passion just radiating from him as he played... and the next day I went out and bought his CD as soon as the store opened. INB became the soundtrack for my life for the rest of that year... It was the only tape in my car, and the only cd in my player at home. And every time I listened to his songs, I felt his love and energy shooting out of the speakers and right into my heart. I will miss Josh so much... my big regret is missing the chance to get to know him better. I moved to Boston shortly before he came home... but didn't find out we were so close by until a few weeks before his passing. If only I'd known sooner. My love goes out to all of Josh's family and friends... We're all together with him in spirit. Jennifer

I am in total shock. I can't believe he is gone. I wish I had known him better. My wife and I saw him open for Tori Amos a couple of years ago and immediately fell in love with his music. I had listened to School of Fish before, but it wasn't until after I bought his CD that I found out he was the lead singer. I just wish more people were aware of his talent. He will be sorely missed.

My heart hurts so badly. It just aches. I had no idea our friend Josh had moved on. Oh my goodness....This is hard. The first and only time I met Josh was at a Dishwalla concert in Boulder Colorado about 3 or 4 years ago. His music blew me away. I was fascinated, I barely allowed myself to blink the entire time he was on stage. After the show, while I was waiting for some friends, I noticed that Josh was watching me from across the room. He motioned for me to join him, so I did. He told me if I wrote my name on his mailing list, he would send me flowers. He was incredibly honest, and seemed so kind and....oh, he was simply beautiful. I am lucky that I crossed paths with such an amazing man. Thankyou friends.

I am in a state of utter shock. I am a screenwriter, and actor and a long time fan of Josh and "School of Fish". Since first being exposed to his music, I have followed his career and I consider his work some of the best I have ever heard. Some things just strike a chord with me and his music is one of those things. I have done my best to pass on his music to all my friends and aquaintences in hopes that they will find the same inspiration that I have. As I write I often listen to his music to help me, and it was through doing this that I happened to look up his name on the internet. I can't tell you how much I was saddened to read the news of his passing. I have never written a letter to someone I didn't know before, but I felt compelled to say something after all that I feel he has done for me. Josh will be greatly missed, and my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. I can only imagine that the same spark that touched all of his fans, lives on in all of you. Sincerely, Scott Cranwill.

I never really knew Josh when he was here in physical form. Many people close to me knew him well. In turn I feel as though I've gotton to know him and I feel a deep sense of loss. I'd be willing to bet the farm that Josh is smiling as he sees the profound change which he has been the catalyst for. Change in not only the lives of the people he knew personally but also the people who come into contact those people...and so on. Josh's passing, as tragic as it is, has opened so many hearts to the light and I hope he is joyful.

School of Fish the first album I had won at some club in Providence back in the early 90's. Ah, the club was JR's Fastlane. I was there to see a Doors tribute band and was underage at the time. At first listen I was hooked. Josh's voice and Mike's guitar work unique. Human Cannonball in my mind was even better. I got to meet Josh and Mike in 1993 for the first time at Club Babyhead RI. I was dressed suit and tie and had a cashmere over coat on. After the show the bouncer was standing in front of the backstage door. So I went over to him and said "I need to get back there and speak with Josh and Mike". Bouncer said okay! I got to hangout with Josh and Mike for awhile they signed my Human Cannonball disc, which I hold very close to me. Since that time of SOF breakup I never really kept up with Mike other than that great solo he played on the song "Trumpet" off of Josh's first solo disc. I've met Josh many times which if you've met him you know how precious that time was.

It is not enough to write that I was deeply, deeply saddend by Josh's death. My heart, and those of my whole family, goes out to Marilyn, Henry, Laura and all those who knew and loved Josh. To read and experience this website, which I have found myself visiting and re-visiting over the past few weeks, is to just begin to understand the impact of one gifted guy on thousands of people -- some who knew him well, others, like me, who have fond memories but may have lost touch over the years, and so very many who experienced him through his music and performances. I have always joyfully remembered the times we spent with Josh as kids -- my sisters, our parents, Marilyn and Henry and Josh -- burrowed away for a few days every winter in Henry's brilliant round house in Vermont. At Hogback mountain, Josh taught me how to ski, but back in the house, he taught me something else, something I did not realize I had learned until quite recently: what an artist is like when he is a boy. Sometimes, after we played checkers and air-hockey and charades, Josh would show me poems he had written, or talk about a short story he was working on for school, or begin fiddling around with a guitar or a harmonica. At the time I was too young to understand what it was all about, but one thing I know I thought was that he was one really cool dude, and that has stayed with me always.

I was truely saddened by the untimely death of Josh. It just recently came to my attention in the LA Weekly.I was hoping it wasn't true. His brilliant music will never be forgotten. Their debut album will forever remain as one of my favorite albums of all time. I'm glad I can say I had the pleasure of seeing School Of Fish twice in concert. Just before I read the message on the webpage, I immediately put on Speechless because I felt it was only appropriate. God Bless You Josh, your music will live on Alex

Meghan Adler, Runkle School classmate (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.):
My most vivid memory of Josh was his white electirc guitar. In 8th grade, my twin sister, Sarah, and my close friends, Amy Goldberg, Beth Moyes and Dave Axelrod, along with other Runkle Schoolers, would head to Clinton Road for "Boy-Girl Parties". Josh would often greet us at the door, barefoot, tight white jeans and a white guitar strapped to his shoulders. God, did we think he was cool! He would lead us to the basement and soon, Dentist Chair and Spin the Bottle, took over. When Josh was not participating in these childish yet highly educational games, he was often in the corner, hanging out peacefully, strumming to Prince and Tears For Fears songs. Years later, the word got out that Josh had actually gone somewhere with that white guitar of his. Amy, Beth and myself, still close friends after all of these years, went to hear him play in Cambridge. It was nice to see him all grown up! The white guitar had been replaced (Thank God!) and the once pubescent face had changed into a mature one, with a goti and long hair. No 80's white jeans by the way! After that, I remained on his mailing list for sometime until I moved to New York. Sarah continued to see him play in Seattle. When I heard the recent news of his passing, I was shocked, saddened and stunned. It brought a deeper sense of mortality to my life. It reminded me of the preciousness of life and the deeper commitment I want to make towards living out my dreams, continuing to be kind to my family and friends and to honoring and remembering those who have left us. Josh, I will remember you. I consider the color white to symbolize grace, peace and serenity. Your guitar was white. You were white, with grace. You brought peace and serenity to those around you. Good bye for now. - Meghan

For all of you that never got to see Josh live or never knew who he was before this awful loss, I am sorry for you. I only had the priviledge of seeing him perform once and I became a fan. Fan is such a bad word but when you really enjoy someones art and it speaks to you a some level, there is no other word. I have been looking for any information on Josh for the last 6 months and had given up. Then today, I finally found something and man what a drag. I can't believe what I have read. Please go out and buy his records, School of Fish, solo stuff, whatever you can find. His gift deserves to be heard. Thanks....

I'm a massive Tonic/Dishwalla fan and the opportunity to see them---- due to the death of some musician I'd never heard of---- in a small venue seemed like a godsend. Afterwards . . . wow. Listening to the artists perform Josh's music, including Dishwalla doing PAINT THE TREE GREEN, I was fascinated and deeply moved. I went to Josh's site and kept playing his songs over and over again, reading the messages of sympathy. Soon, like so many have already said, I began to feel like I'd lost someone close. What a person, what a soul. God bless you, Josh, your family and friends. What a magical man.

To the family, friends and many fans of Josh Clayton-Felt, my prayers are with you. I am deeply sorry for your loss, I am writing for my brother, Gary Hibbard, who was a huge fan of Josh and his music. My brother listened to his words and found comfort while he was going through some very painful experiences. He even had me listening to Josh's music, what a wonderfully talented, young man, who will be missed by many. My brother even said that it felt like he had lost a brother the day Josh passed, he found solace and meaning in Josh's words, and he will eternally be grateful. He met him at a show, briefly, but, he was amazed at the humbleness in Josh's eyes, the softness in his voice as they talked. We both just lost our Mother recently, and we know the pain and longing, but, they are both in a far better place, waiting for us to catch up. Please be at peace knowing that he is in good hands now, and his voice will be heard in the wind and the giggling of children, the rush of the ocean. We will miss you dear friend, be at peace, sing from the mountaintops. Thank you, Josh, Always a fan, Gary L. Hibbard, and Tina Thiry

It was a few days after Josh's passing when I found out and I have held him in my thoughts since then. When I think of Josh the first thing that that come to mind is his constantly smiling face and his bright eyes. He always had kind words for everyone and always treated others with respect. He was a huge inspiration to me and my music and I thank Josh for that. He touched and inspired many and he will live on through them and also through his music. I know that everytime someone thinks of him or listens to his music that he is looking down on them with that beautiful smile on his face. My prayers and love go to his parents, family, and others he left behind. We all miss you terribly Josh, this world just isn't the same without you and your kindness. May we all try hard to carry on the wonderful traits that Josh had. I know that Josh is on his dragonfly flying free in a wonderful, higher place. Ride on forever Josh.

I feel kind of strange posting here, because I only today ever heard of Josh Clayton-Felt. I went to the TONIC page, and found myself learning about someone who evidently touched many people. But I'm grateful in a general way that his friends are dedicated to preserving Josh's memory, that people like me, in the middle of nowhere, might not pass by unaltered. God continue to bless Josh, his friends, and family.

What sad news this was to hear tonight. Music has lost another great talent. I'm glad I was able to shake his hand once. I hope that somebody will take it upon themself to see that josh's "new" record is released. After the tremendous struggle he went though with the business to just own his own music, I think it would be a wonderful tribute to get that record to his fans where it belongs. Josh put up a great fight for all the bands left in the dark by the music business. It would just be right. Live long josh-

I first heard Josh at a Tori Amos concert. He was one of the most lively musicians I have ever seen in my life. Later that year I listened to my brother's School of Fish album, and recognized the voice of Josh. From that moment on, I realized how incredibly talented he was. I was deeply saddened that such a tragedy could occur to such a young man with so much ahead of him. I extend my condolences to all people, fans, friends, and family who ever heard or knew him. I know that he is in Heaven with the people that influenced his writing and music. I never knew Josh personally, but I feel that he is happy where he is right now. God Bless You Josh Clayton-Felt. You will be missed by everyone.

I will never forget when you came back from Boston and I saw you at a Lodge, we hugged, and then you said "it's so good to see you" I think for the first time in my life I felt those words go straight to my heart. They were no longer words, but a message, and I know with your great big heart you sent that message and feelings to a whole lot of other people.     I'm extremely saddened upon hearing that Josh had passed. I've known Josh for many years not only as a fan of his music but also as his recording equipment salesperson. He will be sorely missed. He was one of those very few musicians with the rare combination of having such pure natural talent and being an amazingly nice guy at the same time. A true musician with his head in the right place and a great attitude.

I saw school of fish once at a Kroq acoustic christmas back in the day when it was actually acoustic. Of all the bands that played that night, and there were a lot of them, school of fish struck me more than anything else as a bunch of guys doing what they loved and having fun. The loss of anyone so young and so giving of himself is always tragic. The loss of someone who was so talented as an artist is more painful still. God bless him, and we who were fans thank him, for giving what he gave and leaving it behind.

I didn't know Josh as well as some but he touched me deeply... My first experience meeting Josh was at Anastasia's Coffeehouse in Santa Monica. It was a packed night and the place was running out of clean coffee cups. Josh and Jami Lula went to the back and started washing cups for the establishment. I was so impressed by "let's get back here and help". No ego, just eager to help. I thought... I can learn from this. I spoke with Josh several times and hung out a couple of times and he was so helpful and encouraging for me with regards to my own musical project. His energy was up, fun and deep and at the same time reminded me of my own deceased brother who incidentally had the same birthdate as Josh. I miss his beautiful spirit and am grateful to have been touched by an angel... I look forward to the release of his latest material he was working on prior to his transition. Thank you for your presence on the planet Josh.

In a strange way i am addicted to reading these wonderful condolences.(spelled wrong probably). They really are some of the nicest things i have ever heard. Josh would of been honored in a shy way by having you all as his fans. I wish one day that i could have people look up to me as we do Josh. I was just listening to the live version he sings of 3 strange days on the live album and it is setting the mood perfectly. i hope all of you the very best, love scooter

I was lucky enough to work with Josh during my years in artist development at Capitol-EMI. I spent several "Strange Days" and nights with him and the other guys from School Of Fish. My heart goes out to his family and close friends. The sadest thing to me is that I saw just about a month back at Luna Park. I had just performed stand up in the downstairs room and noticed him (cd box in hand) upstairs heading toward the back room. I thought of saying hello but told my friends "He won't remember me" and did not. A missed chance to talk with someone I always enjoyed. Sleep well Josh, and thank you for the music. ps-will someone please continue to make his music available? I have never heard the live cd or "Beautiful Nowhere" and would love to own them, but the site says they are no longer available. If they become available will someone email me so I can purchase thm.

I just want to send out my sincere condolences to Josh's family, friends and many fans, of which I was one. I got to interview Josh in my native Columbus, Ohio, way back in 1990 for my weekly music column (which then appeared on CompuServe's RockNet forum). He was so accommodating and so pumped about School of Fish and their chances. Later that night, I saw them perform at the Newport Music Hall and was very impressed - especially when they threw out a real curveball, a raucous cover of George Michael's "Father Figure." I remember the audience's faces, many of them thinking "What the hell is this?" - then when they figured it out it was "Father Figure," they loudly roared their approval. I'll never forget that night. Deep down, I was always hoping I'd get to meet Josh again. I only met him briefly, but he had such an infectious spirit ... and that spirit will live on. - Gerry Galipault Pause & Play (the music column) http://www.pauseandplay.com

Wow, ... You'll have to forgive my jumbled thoughts as i just heard earlier tonight on Kroq about Josh's passing. Okay first of all this guy had a great voice.I know that seems very trite and all but I mean really, a great voice. I'm not great with mortality issues to begin with but this brings back to me the horribly sudden passing of Manny Versoza another L.A. local artist. In a weird way we all were kind of a big extended familyI had the honor of seeing Josh perform and jam with him. We talked too.I'm sorry if the words are coming out slow and pointless but I just got home from anohter Tuesday night at the Kibbitz(where most of my contact with Josh took place) and I had to check this webpage to see if it was true.God this is awful. I feel terrible. Mostly for his family and close friends. A happy memory I have is being on tour in Oklahoma and going with my band to a strip joint. In the middle of our piggy trip "Three Strange Days" came on and all I could think of was how Josh had arrived .-I guess that story isn't as nice as i'd hoped but as a working musician I identified with the moment. My deepest condolences to his family. Please support local talent because these are precious and fleeting days.Live Long.

As I read the notice tonight I thought to myself, "In this world nothing surprises me." I consider him A young artist so talented and yet not recognized by enough people to really make a big name for himself in the music world. Most people I bet don't even know he's dead now and that's a shame. He was better than most of the stuff out today which everyone thinks is great. All the girlie pop singers with no talent, just fake boobs and tons of make-up to make them look good. Josh was a loyal fan to his musical style and his fans. This world just doesn't make sense and will never make sense. I stopped trying to make sense of it long ago and this proves my point. A homeless drunk could live to be 80 years old, but someone with a dream and talent dies at 32 of cancer...........no more words can explain the way I feel about this tragedy....Maybe I'll get to meet him after all.

Difficult to know what to say, except what a terrible loss. Josh was a ray of light in this world. Although I did not know him very well, I always enjoyed seeing him play and being around him. He was far too young and wonderful to be taken from this world, but I hope that he is in a peaceful place because that is where he deserves to be.

I haven't the foggiest idea of what to say, to tell the truth. I'm still so in shock that someone so humble and so talented has been taken away from this world. Like many of you, I fell in love with SOF when I was just a little high school girl. I had the opportunity (however brief) to meet Josh a few years back after a performance (opening for Del Amitri). I felt like I was the only person in the place (except for the annoying record company people) who new who the hell he was, but he managed to get the entire crowd's attention with just one note. Surely, it was a style of music that they had never heard before and I was so delighted to hear his new music and see him live for the very first time. Since then, Josh has always lived in my heart and soul and that will not change as long as I am on this earth. I offer my condolences and best wishes to Josh's family and friends. And to all the fans: to forget the music is impossible, but to forget the person behind the music is unforgiveable. Why? Because they are one and the same. Sharon Benson San Juan, Puerto Rico

My husband and I just heard about Josh's death today on a radio station in Boston. We both attended high school with Josh and new him only a bit. We were shocked by the news. I knew he had gone on to do something with music but am amazed by all his accomplishments. In the car after we heard the news my husband said that Josh had given him a really cool poster that had been hanging in his room. I remembered a day when my friend Colleen and Josh and I were hanging out listening to music. He seemed so passionate about the music and now I know why. May peace and comfort be with his family and friends and with Josh himself.

it took me a couple of weeks to think of what to say but i think i can put it on the screen now. well i learned of a group in 1989 as everyone else knows as sof. i feel we all have similiar stories and i find it fascinating to hear everyone elses, i was a junior in high school and in high school you are what you listen to. i was, back then a "surfer, skater style kid" (this style doesn't exist anymore for those who are not my age) everyday after school we would surf and endlessly listen to the sof cd. my memories carried on to college in which i 1st saw sof in 1990 in providence at a little club named babyhead. i there found $450 in cash on the floor and i was very excited and bought alot of stickers and shirts with my find. well what i am trying to say is i have so many of my most important memories set to the different tracks of music. i always listened to the cd's in my dorm and i probably got 10 -15 people into josh. i then left providence for my post college years deciding on what i am doing with my life back in new york, long island to be exact. many friends have moved on but i continued to travel often on long extended trips. i hopped in my vw bus & headed out on a 1 1/2 month trip throughout this country and of course josh's 3 cd's came along. we probably listened to them 100 times each. well that was 96' and in 98 i went to see him up in boston in a little place. i waited till after the show and it was just a hand full of us. i introduced myself and before i knew it we were talking for 20 minutes about anything but i did keep bringing up what a HUGE influence his music has been on my life. he was very sincere with his answers and he seemed very honest. he found it fascinating that i drove 300 or so miles to hear and see him. being 25 years old at this time i felt a little funny telling all this stuff, felt more comfortable when i was 15 meeting michael hutchence (ironic, huh). so, anyway he gave me a set list and here were the songs he played that night, 1.doubt, 2.dead american,3.spirit, 4.night of 1000 girls, 5.love sweet love, 6.backwards world, 7.rise , 8.kid on "le train", (sound familiar) 9.diamond in yo heart, 10.well of soul, on the bottom he drew a dragonfly and wrote the word too. its neat! anyone have any of these mystery tunes on cd? i wish somebody could send me a copy of the cd i dont have which is the last one, beautiful nowhere. i really need this copy and a copy of the live one, mine is ruined! someone please help!!!! i will send u blank cdr's if u want! anyway, i feel and heard so many of your beautiful stories and i figure i would add one. he truly was a unique person and i am really going to miss him. i have never felt this way before about this kind of thing. i havent cried in 10 years or so and when i read that eulogy i couldn't help but to break a tear. we all have this special tie with this great person, i hope to hear future happenings with josh so we never forget what he has done for all of us! live life to the fullest everyday, love scooter

It is obvious that Josh has touched many people in many very special ways. I am glad I have been one of those people. Anyone who has had the pleasure of getting to know Josh knows and has felt his magic. Living with Josh in Hollywood and playing music with him in Brookline captures many of my fondest memories and I am grateful to Josh for sharing his thoughts and dreams with me during those times. Josh has touched me somewhere deep inside and I don't know how or why. That was part of Josh's gift and he shared it so freely and genuinely. "Sleep well" Josh, and rest from your untimely struggle to be refreshed for your next life. I sincerely hope I will have the pleasure to know you out of spirit again. Thank you so much. Marylin and Henry, please be aware of my deepest and sincerest condolences. You have clearly lost a precious treasure that we will all be searching to find again. My Love to you all. Peter.

Dear community of friends of Josh, We only met Josh two years ago, on New Years Eve at his mom's home. But we realized immediately that this was an extraordinary person, a positively radiant, upbeat, gifted, and delightful young man. We were quite taken with his music and very distressed to hear about the difficulty he had in getting it performed because of restrictive contract issues. We felt his joy in performing and sharing, even in that small group. We are grateful that we had that brief opportunity to know for ourselves what we already understood across a long time from his loving and proud mother. They shared their creativity as well as their love. We miss him, we send our love to your broad community, to his extensive family, and especially to Marilyn.

Dear Josh, Thank you for bringing your beautiful, Josh-ian joy and tenderness into my life in so many ways. Remember when we learned to moon walk together (eek!)? Remember hanging out on the floor of your living room after school listening to Prince and Tears for Fears albums? Watching the marathon Live Aid broadcast? Or acting spastic when we said goodbye, throwing our keys or whatever we were holding into the air and saying "oh, my goodness, oh, my goodness," then picking them up and geting all cool and saying "yo, man, I'll check you later"? How about singing the star spangled banner into a hand-held recorder at half speed so that when we played it back it sounded like the chipmunks? That was so funny. Thank you for being a source of love in my life. I will work hard to carry the torch. I miss you, my friend. You are with God now. You two were always pretty tight - now you get to hang out together. We'll keep on keepin' on, as hard as that can be at times, so don't forget to come back or a visit every once in awhile. I love you and miss you. Jan

Josh's Mom here. It took two weeks until I could look at Josh's web site, or anything else that confirmed the finality of his death. But, slowly, friends and family have been telling me about or reading me your letters. I want you to know how much those letters are meaning to me. Of the many sources of grief, one is that Josh so appreciated life and yet his life was cut so short. But your letters make clear that the life he had was full beyond anything I could imagine, that he touched many people, and that perhaps he will live on through his music. With love to you all- Marilyn

There are certain days in your life you'll always remember--Josh's smiling face shines in one of my special memories. In 1978 I put on my first pair of skis and braved the slopes of Hogback mountain. With Josh as my guide and mentor, I conquered the T-bar, headed downhill, and learned to love the snow. Each time I fell, Josh was there to offer a hand and encouraging words. He stayed by my side all day, challenging me to try a steeper hill--maybe a jump. We told jokes. We laughed. We raced. We pushed the limits of my fledgling skill. I was 14--he was 11. And at that young age he was already a gifted teacher--he inately balanced encouragement, information, humor and support. In simple terms, he gave me a day I will never forget--and a joy that has lasted. That day lead to many ski trips for me--but that day in 1978 was the only time I ever skied with Josh. He gave me a gift. And as I plan my sons' first ski trip--as I think about passing the joy along to them--I think of Josh. And I realize how lucky I am to have spent one wonderful day with him 22 years ago. When they're older, I'll tell Tristan and Tyler about my first day on skis.

After clearing the credit card of holiday purchases, it was with giddy anticipation that I logged on to this site last Monday to *finally* order Beautiful Nowhere. Giddiness quickly turned to horror when the page came up on my browser. I've never had the chance to meet Josh or see him perform, but I have always been a big fan of his music, and from the comments on these boards, it certainly sounds like he was an ever better human being than he was a musician! Here's a bizarre story that makes this all the more tragic for me personally. Back when I was in high school, I discovered these two great bands fronted by two incredibly talented singer/songwriters. One was obviously School of Fish w/ Josh. The other was a band called Toy Matinee, led by Kevin Gilbert. I thought the world of both Josh's & Kevin's abilities. I had just discovered Josh's "INB" CD in the spring of 1996. During one of the first few listens, I saw a blurb in the USA Today mentioning that Kevin Gilbert had passed away. Now last Monday, the very day I received Kevin Gilbert's posthumously released rock opera, "The Shaming of the True" (which is about the insidiousness of the corporate music indistry, no less), I learned of Josh's passing. Freaky, eh? These two young & talented individuals were both taken from us way too soon, and they will forever be intertwined in my thoughts. My condolences to Josh's loved ones and to those who knew him personally, although from the sound of it, those two groups of people are one in the same. Sincerely, Steve Sirk

He also had a great presence on stage and put on a hreat show. I just ran into him last summer (I think) when he played a show at the Paradise.     For those of you who don't know me, I have known Josh since we were 8 years old. We played Little League on the Cambridge West division All-Star team together and I was at the hospital when he decided he was ready to move on. I am 32 and he IS still my BEST friend. Reading the beautiful messages here has helped me immensely. As has the daily support from all the people that I have gotten to know, just by being Joshy's pal. His world is filled with amazingly kind-hearted people and the biggest tribute to my best friend is the warmth and love that has come from this tragedy. He IS about sweetness and peace and caring. And he was funny. Very, very funny. I am proud to have stood watch over him with his mom, Marilyn, sister, Laura, and Raina, Chad, Bob, Renee, Henry, George, John, Saverio and everyone else who came by, called and prayed. Be kind to yourselves and one another. That is what my best friend was ALL about. I miss talking to him everyday, although I still do...

Wow, I can't believe I'm doing this again. About two and a half years ago, I found out that my second favorite musician, Jeff Buckley, had drowned in a river near Memphis, Tennessee. Tonight I was flipping channels when I caught the short MTV news announcement that Josh, my favorite musician, had died. I guess it was about 8 years ago that I first heard Josh's voice. I was typing up a report for a high school class, and I popped in a tape my friend Doug had lent me. Nirvana's new album was on side A; on side B was some band I'd never heard of, some band named School of Fish. When I gave the tape back to Doug, I told him I'd taped both sides. When he said I didn't have to tape both, I told him I'd probably be listening to side B much more than side A. I just can't figure out how to express how special it felt to hear Josh's music playing. It was like, whenever I would play his tape or cd around other people, in a room or in the car, I couldn't pay attention to them, because I wanted to listen to the music. And I would think to myself, "How can you even be speaking now? These sounds, these words, they are so beautiful." You can just sense it when you hear Josh's music, how special he is, what a wonderful person he is. Thank you, Josh. I will miss you. Love, Matt

Hello everyone. I have been out of town for a week and on Saturday, when I returned, my dad informed me that Josh had died of cancer. I had not known that he had been ill, only that I had not heard from him in a long time. The last I heard he was excited about his new album being recorded.... I only got to see Josh play once in St. Louis. The show was not a part of his scheduled tour. He had a break from touring for a night and he got to choose anywhere in the region he wanted to play. He chose St. Louis. I had never even heard of him really, but I just so happened to be listening to the radio one Saturday afternoon and just so happened to decide to call the radio station for free tickets and just so happened to be the tenth caller..... Me and my dad went to the show and we fell in love with his music... We bought everything of his we could find. i listened to the live album so much it will hardly play anymore!! It is so sad to me to think I will never see Josh smiling and playing his guitar again, but I know he did a lot in his lifetime. He wrote a very interesting book, had a somewhat hit song at 19 years-old and toured with Tori Amos, among other things. His song "What Good is Heaven" comes to mind, but I know heaven is good for Josh, beacuse he is not alone. So now I will go, but I just want to leave you with a little something: "The clouds are below me now, I can be anything But I don't have to let it go to know what you mean and nothing is nothing like I thought nothing would seem, it would seem. And this is the most beautiful place I'll ever know." --Josh Clayton-Felt January 19, 2000 Love always, Erin Bonuso St. Louis, Mo

Josh and I were best friends through 5 of the most golden years of my life. We went to high school together at The Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts. We were songwriting partners in our first real gigging and recording band together. We shared a room in a house in Hollywood with a bunch of other ambitious young artists for a couple of lean years when we moved out from Boston. We listened to The Beatles a lot and argued about big things. The music we made was pretty crappy but it felt like we were genius and, for a time, we were so attuned that we could read eachother's minds. Unfortunately, I fear that young men of our time and backgrounds are not naturally inclined toward civility or compromise, or even closeness, at least we weren't. We both ended up using the other as something of a scratching post and the end of the band, as well as the end of the close phase of our relationship, was not handled very well. We each faded into our own lives in LA and met ocassionally for lunch, or a hike. We would have good talks but I think we both felt things that we were afraid to share. Resentments and hurts which we didn't want to admit to, didn't want to burden the other with. We would have good surface encounters and then get back to our lives. The few times that we played music together after the break-up of the band were great. He sang back-up on one of my records, and we recorded a song together for "That Thing You Do" which was not chosen to be in the film. Both of those times we seemed to fall right back into rhythm with eachother and I have always just assumed that we would collaborate again once we had grown up enough to deal with the old crud. We were beginning that process in the last year, unfortunately... I will miss Josh because there is a huge part of my life that departs with him. I mourn the memories that only he and I could share. The things that only he could remind me of. I am incredibly grateful that he was an artist who could communicate his spirit to tape and I believe his voice will guide me back to at least some of those memories that I mourn. I send my deepest love and condolences Josh's family. Peace.

Back in 1991 I was in the process of forming a band. My current, and only drummer, an I used to literally play along to the first School of Fish album all the time. Yesterday, Piper, reflected at how he pretty much learned how to play drums listening to that record. Granted the album used a drum machine, but to develop a certain level of rhythm, it helped. I still find myself listening to that record and Human Cannonball regularly. When I read the obit in my local paper, I was quite shocked. As all of you probably understand, when a great talent leaves us, the body of creative work is left behind for enjoyment for the time to come. I'm looking forward to these moments, the next time I put on Euphoria, Rose Colored Glasses or Take Me Anywhere, I will remember how lucky I was to see this band back in the early nineties. Hopefully someone out there will put together a tribute tape/disc and if so, please let me know so that my band can contribute. We would be honored to cover a song or two for this. Please let us know, and may Josh rest in peace. God Bless you all.

I feel honored to have known Josh, and to have shared in music-making with him. We wrote a song together once.(Actually, he wrote most of it...I just added a few jazz chords).Ironically, the song was called, "Heaven". Josh was always trying to up the quality of his life. But he also wanted to share his findings with others, to enighten them, as well. I remember once he insisted on taking me to a Chinese herbalist in New York City. He was very excited about it. I was skeptical. I ended up boiling all the water out of my herbal concoction. My apartment reaked for months. Josh had better luck, though. Because he believed in good things. Josh had an openmindedness that was infectious. He had a child-like fascination with things that made you think twice about something. Josh loved music. I remember listening to Frank Sinatra records with him. His face: A boyish, far-away smile that said, "God, I love this--don't you?" As we say goodbye to Josh, let's all believe in good things.

I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear this news. Josh was my absolute favorite singer. I remember the first time I heard him- I was listening to the human cannonball album at tower records on sunset blvd, and after hearing only a couple seconds of one of the songs, I immediately purchased the album. His voice sounds so perfect to me- I've enjoyed listening for so many hours over the last 7 years. Unlike all other music I've heard, I never get tired of listening to Josh. I never knew him personally, but feel like I've lost someone close to me. I don't know why something like this has to happen; it seems like he should have had so many more years to share his gift with others. I pray that he and his family will be taken care of and have faith that there is a higher plan that I cannot understand.

I bought the cd and loved most all the songs..then I forgot about them. Anyways, after some research I got to an unofficial School Of Fish page and then came across this one. TO my shock Josh had passed away from cancer. One thing very interesting is that I am in a heated battle with Testicular Cancer right now and start Chemo a week from Monday. I was wondering what type of Cancer Josh had??...I cant find that info anywhere. Seems kind of wierd how it came to me..Is there a song of Josh's on Kroq these days??..I could of swore it was him..     There is something that me and my dear freinds do often. We gather and we enjoy our company in the form of what we call "choogles." It is a party of freindship. Music is always the most special and popular expression of our loyalty to each other. We share music, we discuss music, several of my freinds create music... it is ethereal and real: it is a testament to ourselves. We enjoy fully those songs, or artists, that we all share a common passion for. The Who, John Fogerty, Van Morrison etc... School of Fish is one of those bands, is a common feeling. Josh's live version of Save It For Later is a particularlt strong thread among us. We cherish it. When we hear Josh sing it, time after time, we often relax into our own selves and enjoy the silent company that this song realises. We have placed it as one of the songs we can not do without. There are other songs, but this can very well be the most important. Without it, I think we would all be a tad more lost. It is very rare that a song can gather together such savage bastards and bring them closer. I, and I will speak for them also, thank Josh for his gift to us. And I hope he understands what it means. I hope he is aware, in that realm of clarity he is suspended in now, what his song, and his feeling, mean to us. I know God has blessed him, because through him, God has blessed us.

I am in shock, to say the least. I've been working in and around record stores for the better part of 10 years now, and School Of Fish was the first band I ever met way back in '91. My manager told me we were going to have an acoustic in-store performance by them, and I had never heard of them. I was hooked right away, and a few years later I booked them to play at my college in Tempe. I had only recently found Josh's website and was looking forward to some more solo stuff, and hopefully there will be more. His music is deeper and more meaningful to me than I ever realized, because it was there for me at a tough time in my life, and it is obvious from reading this comments page that I am not alone. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, as we sadly add another member to the helluva band they got up there in heaven.

For a professional spin on how Josh treated those who he worked with, i can offer this brief story: back in 1995 or 96 (or thereabouts) I was working for PolyGram Distribution, the record distributor for Josh's record label. I was a Promotions Rep based in Pittsburgh, PA (this means i put up posters in record stores, created promotions, hyped bands, and helped with getting a venue ready for concerts), and Josh was touring through, trying to get the boneheaded commercial modern rock station to play "window", the amazing single from the new album. I was at Metropol, the venue Josh was playing at that night, and as i was putting up posters all around the inside of the club, i felt someone tap me on the shoulder and say "Ah, Hi....I'm Josh. Who are you?" and I told him i was with the record label, and he was all "wow, hey, thanks a lot for doing this. I really appreciate it. i'm never sure if anyone is paying attenition, you know?" We talked about the record for a bit, and he went off to do his sound check. While I was with PolyGram (now Universal) i repped about 300+ concerts, and that is the only time an artist made a point to approach the lowly poster boy to say thanks! We ended up hanging out that night after the show with another label guy and a radio girl, and toured around the city...riding an incline up to the top of Mount Washington to look at the stars. He was so happy to be outside and looking up at

Like so many of the wonderful memorials I've read here on this page I have to start out by saying how shocked I was by the news of Josh's passing. I heard yesterday and immediately broke out this local(new haven ct) program I have with an acoustic set performed in a record store and some footage of SOF's soundcheck for that evenings show at Toad's Place. Sleep in their eyes and all all they put on a great acoustic set that day and their show that night(which I was in attedence) was spectactular. It was that night I realized School of Fish was something special, something more than I had anticipated. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Josh about year later when they toured this area for Human Cannonball.....I sheepishly gushed praise on him and the two records and asked him about their cover of "Save It For Later" on the "Take Me Anywhere" single. I asked which version had influenced him more, the English Beats, who wrote the song, or Pete Townshend's whose version albeit acoustic more resembles SOF's. He told me it was Townshends and in the encore of their set that night they did a version of that song in which the shock waves are still being felt here. A friend of mine likes to joke about that evening but the most important thing that happened was after the show. I waited outside and approached the band to sign my "Take Me.." single and Josh wrote "We're YOUR number one fans" in obvious reference to my praise of him earlier. I'll never forget that, it was a real moment for me and I'll never forget Josh Clayton-Felt or his music and it's impact on my life.

I am extremely saddened and heartsick to learn of Josh's passing, but grateful for the wonderful music and memories he has left us. School of Fish was the first band I ever saw live. I still think that their performance of Euphoria was one of the best things I've ever seen. I also remember almost going deaf seeing them at Cal Poly Pomona, but it was worth it. Then when I saw them at the Palace, I remember Josh started off wearing a baseball cap, then during one song he shook it off and out tumbled his full, Pantene-nourished 'fro, and I thought it was so sensual! The first time I saw him live as a solo act, it was at the Dragonfly, and I got his autograph afterwards on a setlist. I was so excited that I stuck it on to the front of my School of Fish t-shirt and wore it the whole night. We also had fun on the email discussion list. I was a lucky co-winner of his handwritten banana pancake recipe in the Six Degrees of Josh contest. My most recent treasured memory of him is his handwritten dedication to "Marvelous Marmi" on my copy of Beautiful Nowhere. Not only is he the most brilliant musician of our generation, he was also the nicest and most down-to-earth. His music will always be a huge part of my life. The groove goes on forever...

I am deeply crushed and very saddened to read of Josh's untimely passing in the Billboard Bulletin mediafax that arrived this morning. I was immediately taken back to the time he musically entered my life when I got the promotional single of "Soon Enough" while I was working at an L.A. radio trade magazine. From the time I heard the intro to the time he sang the first line, I knew whoever this "Josh Clayton-Felt" guy was, he had me hooked with his presentation, this cat had it going on. I had to call A & M to get the album the song came from right then and there. But, check this out: it was not an alternative thing for me; I heard "soul" in Josh's voice, and you cannot fake that kind of feeling as a musician, whether you're singing and/or performing. Josh was born in 1967, the most beautiful year for pop music. Radio stations could play a Rolling Stones record, next to an Aretha Franklin record, next to a Beatles record; it was all good then, with no musical segregation like it is now. We, as a society, had yet to know anything about the Vietnam war or experience the back-to-back murders of Martin Luther King, Jr. or Robert Kennedy, which were right around the corner. Life in 1967 was happy; you could trust your neighbor (regardless of what color he/she was), kids had "treehouses" in their backyards, and there was a warm feeling in the air and in your heart that you could really do things to make life better for all. How fitting that this lovely moment in time was the atmosphere in which Josh was born. He had a "gift," that of his music, which touched all of us in an all but too short span of time. My group, Motherless Child, is currently recording an album which I had planned to include an R & B version of "Soon Enough." I had envisioned presenting this personally to Josh and seeing his reaction to it, us talking about his music and the like. Now, when we finish doing that song, I am going to take it home and crank it up, playing it for an audience of one; I know you will hear it up there, Josh. Although you have left the room, "something beautiful remains." Love you, bro; Peace out.

I just found out today about Josh's passing - I was shocked and saddened. He was such a great young talent. Honestly, I was not exposed to much of his solo work, unfortunately, but I was a huge School of Fish fan. I remember seeing Josh and the band in 1992 when they opened for Crowded House at Deep Ellum in Dallas. What a show they put on! I was the Program Director for the Stephen F. Austin State University radio station at that time. The whole School of Fish debut album was played LOTS on our alternative format. "3 Strange Days" was right up there with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as one of our most played songs from 1991. To this day, it's one of the few CD's from that time period that I can easily just press play and enjoy every song. My thoughts and prayers go out to Josh's family and friends. What a sad loss for a great talent. Eric Wilson Houston, Texas, USA

At first I was shocked, then saddened when I heard the news. I slipped in Josh's CD and went to his website for comfort. Now I'm inspired. When I saw him last, at the benefit in Topanga at the Theatricum, I remember thinking that it was the perfect venue for him. Josh played out in the open air of a beautifully misty/sunny day. The trees and two little girls were dancing to his music, and everyone there felt like family. Even though it was a short set, Michael Ward was there; they played "3 Strange Days" and I felt so lucky. I think we all feel blessed to have had Josh around and to still have his music with us. He was so respectful and appreciative of his fans. I can't think of Josh, such a gentle, talented, sweet person, and stay sad, even though I miss him. He made me believe again that art is something that comes from your heart, not for awards and glory, but to share with others. While Josh deserved fame, I don't think it would have changed him much. He was so true to himself and his music in every way.

I've never been moved to write something like this before and unlike many of you, I hadn't followed Josh's exploits lately. even so, I'm so saddened to hear of his passing. It's strange how news like this hits you, takes you back... I was an intern at a small music publishing co. in LA in 1989. The whole office loved School of Fish or as we called them, "Josh & Mike's band", wanted to sign them badly. At the time, you really couldn't call them "a band" because at the time, when playing live, all the "tracks" (drums, bass, etc.) were sequenced into an M1 so it was just the two of them on stage with guitars. That's not to say it was Simon & Garfunkel because their shows were loud, engaging and energetic. It was fantastic because even their earliest songwriting was brilliant, lyrically and musically (has anyone out there heard their song "Oklahoma"? no, not that Oklahoma. That's a song I still put on mix tapes). They were the first unsigned band I'd ever heard that moved me more than what was coming out of my tape deck. Those old demos and Capitol releases still do, every time. Another time, at a birthday party for their manager, Sandy, I think her name was, the two of them just played acoustics in the backyard, taking requests. "Speechless" was their newest song and being proud of their latest achievement (and constantly being badgered by all of us), they played it many times. What a special evening, what a special moment. I just didn't know at the time how lucky I was. Today, upon reading the news, I'm right back there. It's sadly wonderfully. Josh was a fantastic artist and a class act.

Wow, I shocked and very sad to hear the latest news about Josh. The first time I saw him was on MTV's "120 Minutes" for the Window video. I was hooked right away. Kept seeing it weekly on the show. Then wanted to buy the album. My brother I discovered had it and we listened to it all the time. Last year I bought Josh's debut album and it always plays in my 200 disc changer. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Situations like Josh's make you realize that each and every day in life is a blessing. I think its great that fans can now pass on Josh's music to others by this website.

I've never taken the time to write to a memorial message board like this before... but today I feel strangely compelled to do just that. I was working in college radio back in the early 90's when the first School of Fish album came out. I remember getting multiple copies of a promo EP called "The Wrong Sampler," where you put the needle in the middle of the record and the groove was pressed backwards (so that the record actually played from the inside out.) The novelty trick actually worked: it got me to listen to the song... "3 Strange Days," which ended up being a priority track on our station shortly thereafter. When I graduated college, I took a job writing for our local newspaper... and was a bit irritated when I found out I had to put pen in hand and go review the Tori Amos concert heading through town. I'm NO fan of Tori, so I was dreading the event... until I got to hear Josh opening - he was the saving grace of the evening. It's not too often that an opening act at a show gets the crowd SOO involved in the music, the lyrics, the whole ambience of the evening. By the time all was said and done, Josh was received just as openly and warmly by the audience as Tori was. I left that show with a new, deep respect for Josh and his music... and to find out that someone that vibrant, that alive... had passed... well, it was a shock to say the least. I'm not convinced there IS an afterlife (I WISH i was, but I'm too much the realist to believe something I can't grasp in my hand,) but then I got to thinking... I believe in the power of music... yet that's something I can't hold onto either. There's magic out there, folks, and Josh is now a PART of that magic. His music, his legacy, will live on for those of us in the know... Let's face it, Josh's popularity was just starting to take off. So what I propose we need to do is TELL as many people as possible about Josh's music... the next time you make a mixtape for a friend, be sure to put one of Josh's tracks on it... keep his name out there... keep his music playing... and keep searching for other artists as open, as honest, as down-to-earth as Josh. I don't want to hear statements like "the world is a little darker now"... I want to hear that a few select people out there might just pick up a School of Fish record somewhere down the road and go, "Yeah, this is what I want to do, too..." There can be no greater legacy. Rest in peace, Josh.

I met Josh in 1996 at Tori's show. He was backstage while I was waiting to meet Tori. We chatted for awhile like we had known one another although we had just met. After meeting Tori, I went out to watch to the show, and the lead act was Josh! His music was pure genius, and I was stunned to learn of his death.     As a songwriter and artist Josh was unique and vibrant. Although I had only seen him perform twice, each time he had a very loyal group of fans and fellow artists attend. In a small music community, he was very vocal in opposition to the corporate nature of the music business. As an artist told me that he wanted to organize a group of fellow artist who were "dropped" by the Universal/PolyGram merger, to perform the other artists songs. This was because the labels had spent money to develop the artist and album and would not let the artists take the songs when they dropped them. This corporate policy now has a proven casualty, Josh. It is unfortunate, but his fans and potential new fans were robbed of the possibility of buying and hearing his new material. I hope that there is a way for us fans to purchase this music now. Perhaps even a portion of the proceeds can goto cancer research. There are so many things I can say, but I am truly at a loss, it is tragic that someone as talented and warm as Josh has passed on. My warm thoughts to his family and friends Sincerely,

Wow, I just read the news in Billboard and I'm so shocked, I don't know where to begin. The School Of Fish debut was recommended to me by my brother back in 1991 - I bought it and was immediately hooked. "3 Strange Days" and several other tracks were staples of my college radio show that year, and "Fell" became something of a personal anthem for that period of my life. "Human Cannonball" blew me away a few years later with its punishing guitars and big beats, and then they seemed to just fall off the map. I was working sales at a CD distribution warehouse when a promo of "Inarticulate Nature Boy" found its way into my hands, prompting great anticipation that was rewarded by a challenging and mature effort, which of course was criminally overlooked by the general public. And then he seemed to disappear again. So I was delighted to see him involved as a member of Jewel's band for "Spirit" - his guitar work was as good as ever - and hoped more of his own work would follow soon. Sadly, we will hear that album but won't be able to congratulate him in person for his efforts, or hear him play them in concert. Josh, I never knew you personally, but your voice and your music resonated with me from the beginning and awakened me to many possibilities for my own work, and for that I thank you. You will be missed more than you could possibly know. Rest easy, brother. Until the next life, Godspeed. GJT

He had a great influence on me and my guitar playing. It's so sad that I never got to tell him how much his music meant to people. So what if he never won a Grammy, he had such an influence on our lives. I wish I had a chance to meet him.     Some time ago (in the early 90's) at the suggestion of my drummer, my band covered Three Strange Days. I'd never heard of the song or the band, but immediately fell in love with the music. I learned the guitar for every song on the album. Just about a month ago, while I was going through my CD collection, I came across my one and only School of Fish CD. I've been listening to it on my commute to and from work. I've been yearning for something more from School of Fish, so I started searching the Internet and ended up here only a week after Josh's untimely death. I've never even seen a picture of Josh before today, but just knowing that he's not around anymore is enough to make me miss him. I know that tonight, when I go home, I'll be plugging the guitar in and going through every song on that CD.

This sucks and it hurts My prayers go out to his family and all who knew Josh. He's so cute and seemed like the nicest guy.     I first was introduced to Josh/School of Fish back in the early 90's (91 maybe?) when his band was opening for Jesus Jones at the Palace in Hollywood. I was amazed at their wonderful songs and live they were excellent. Many bands just don't connect with you the first time you see them live (having never heard them prior) but School of Fish DID connect with me. After the show, I was in the parking lot sitting on a curb. Josh (I didn't know his name yet) came walking by and asked me if I had the time. I looked at my watch and answered. He took a seat next to me as if he was a friend that had just come to meet me and have a chat. I can't recall everything we talked about, but I do remember him telling me that his band had just been signed to Capitol and they were thinking of album titles. So I said, "Well, you're called School of Fish, why not call it 'Breathing underwater'?" He smiled and said he liked that one and would keep it in mind. We chatted for several more minutes about this and that and I told him how much I liked their music. He was very gracious and sincere and I KNEW that this was an honest, down-to-earth type of guy who didn't come off like a rock star that was above his fans. I asked him to sign a small flyer I had taken from a table inside and he didn't hesitate. After handing it back to me, we said goodbye and he was off... I looked down at my new keepsake and saw he had written: Josh Clayton Breathing Underwater .........I'll miss you, Josh. -Mike

It is amazing how a person can be so saddened by the death of someone he or she had never met or spoken with. The thing is, I definately have met and spoken with Josh Clayton through his music. And for that I will always be grateful. Josh's passing has left me feeling much the same as I did when I learned of Jeff Buckley's death. It is unfortunate that most people will be forever blind to Josh's and Jeff's dedication to being good people. I feel Duncan Sheik's tribute to Jeff Buckley is a good way to say goodbye to Josh: "Speed on to the next world. Speed on to the next life."

Josh's death is a great loss to this world. We were not close, but our paths crossed over the years directly (CSW) and indirectly (mutual friends). The last time I remember being with him we were at a party and still in high school. He was playing music and I was getting loaded, two things we did with equal passion. Fortunately his passion for music out lasted my inebriation. Josh will be missed by those of us who knew him and those who did not have the opportunity, but were touched by his songs.     Josh, You were the first familiar face I saw when I moved to Los Angeles from Atlana in 1995. What a beautiful face! My band and SOF played only two shows, yet we immediately felt a connection, so it really felt like two old comradesme meeting again after a very long time. We both were earnestly trying to make our way in the very foreboding music industry. I never doubted for a second whether there was a place for you. Your talent and love of music inspired me to believe as long as I was willing to face the challenge I could find the voice in myself to never give up. YOU were always such a star, and you were my friend, who owned a VERY COOL car. So right now I'm imagining you smiling behind that dashboard... the kind they just do not make anymore, and reminding me to trust in the power of music to keep me whole. You had such purpose in everything you tried...oh yeah, and honesty. You will always remain inside my heart. Until we me again my dear friend. Bless your humongous heart. LOve, Love, Love, Ruthie

The first time I met Josh, 10 years ago, I read his Tarot Cards. For some strange reason, he thought I was good at it and I read his cards many times over the years. It was the beginning of a long, close friendship. Words don't seem to do at a time like this. I feel selfish when I grieve. I know that Josh would want everyone to be o.k.. Has anyone noticed that the sun hasn't been out since he died? Still...I try to think happy thoughts. I keep remembering the funniest things that we talked about and did together. Many years ago, we made a pact one night (while talking about alien life) that if either one of us was ever abducted that we would promise to make the aliens pick the other one up. We were serious. That's what I loved most about Josh -- his ability to commit totally in the moment -- he was a rare and beautiful man. I miss his humor and his smile, his wacky hair, our late night candlelight conversations about the strangest things, his curiosity, his compassion, his brutal honesty, his wisdom, his sense of community, and his faith in others. My life will never be the same since losing him, but it changed forever the day we met. My one regret is that we didn't spend much time together the last year or two. I spoke to him about a week before he went into the hospital (before he knew he was sick) and we promised to see each other after the holidays. We talked for a while and he sounded really good. It was really great to connect and I am so sad that we didn't get to see each other again. My fiance says that the reason it's been raining and gloomy is because when somebody really special dies, sometimes even the heavens' cry. I cry a lot and my heart goes out to his family and other friends who are also greiving. Josh was a sunbeam and the world just doesn't make sense when such a bright light is taken from us. I can't get the new songs out of my head, especially "You're too cool for this world." Josh was too cool for this world, for sure. He was just passing by - but in the short time he was here he touched all of our lives on such a deep level. I think he made all of us better people. I had a dream about Josh a few days before he died. In it, he was very happy and joking and light-hearted. Then he asked me quite seriously if I would help to take care of his baby. He said that I would be a good mother and that he would really appreciate it. When I woke, I realized that the 'baby' he was referring to was his new album. Josh was a gifted poet and musician, a teacher, a healer, and his music was one very special way he connected with others. Josh was a generous and kind friend. A few years ago, he lent me his Treehouse Studio to record basic tracks for my record. We just finished overdubs last week and will be mixing soon. Josh programmed all the drums and was responsible for inspiring and encouraging me to play many instruments I had never touched before. His soul and spirit are all over the record and it's weird to look at the Treehouse tracking sheets and know he is gone (from the earthly plane anyway). When I feel sad, I try to remember something funny he said or did. I have so many great memories. When I think about him, I can't help but smile. I just know he is rocking out in heaven and that now he is one of our coolest angels. I love you Josh. And I miss you terribly. See you on the other side or in the next life, my friend. I know we'll meet again. -- Nicky

It seems unfair for God to have taken his good son, away from the people that seemed to need him most. I am glad you are with our father and creator. Tell him hello for me. We shall all see you soon. Love ya now and forever.

Dear Josh, I just wanted you to know that a bunch of us from CSW (Josh' high school)got together in SF on the 22nd to remember you and toast you. None of us had seen you in a while, but you were enough a part our experience that we felt the need to gather. We played your music and looked at yearbooks and talked. I remember the time we were strumming and singing in the house you and Andras lived in; simple and sweet, your voice like honey. That was a rich moment. I also wanted you to know that when I lived in LA for a short time I was listening to the radio, and in an otherwise murky sea of corperate predictable voices I heard a funky soulful voice that spoke to me and made my day. That voice turned out to be you singing Window. My deepest sympathy to your friends and family. with love, Amos

When I hear Three Strange Days on the radio, it's like an old friend calling on the telephone to remind me of where my center is, and how fast and far I've been traveling outward from it, and how soon I will inevitably arrive there again. That song will be played forever as an anthem for scattered, searching souls. Blessings, friend. Know peace. We're better off for your having touched us.

I was first introduced to Josh and his music in the fall of 1996 when he opened for Tori Amos here in Binghamton, NY. What struck me about this wondeful musician was how wholly and completely he captivated the crowd that night, and did so within the confines of a thirty minute set. Josh, his guitar, and his magnetic and inviting presence put a smile on everyone's face that night. After he left the stage I immediately went to the lobby and purchased his c.d.. That night, and many nights after, I listened to it, captivated. In all honesty, I never saw Josh perform again, nor did I ever obtain any more of his music, but so often I think back to his performance on that cold night in Binghamton...and I still smile. My condolences to his family, friends, and fans. Rest in peace, Josh.

Just as in this body the soul of a person passes into childhood, youth and old age, so does he pass into another body; the wise man dies not grieve thereat. Know that to be indestructible bye whom all this is pervaded. None can cause destruction of That, the Imperishable. These bodies of the imperishable soul are said to have an end, so the wise who know the truth about this grieve not for the departed. The soul within each of us is unborn, nor does It ever die. It is unborn, eternal, changeless and ancient. It is not killed when the body is killed. Just as a man casts off worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so also does the embodied soul casts off worn-out bodies and enters that are new. Weapons cut It (the Soul...the true we) not, fire can burn It not, water can wet It not, the wind can dry It not. The soul in each one of us is ETERNAL, ALL-PERVADING, STABLE, ANCIENT AND IMMOVABLE. It is Unmanifested, Unthinkable and Unchangable. When the body dies the soul, the very essence of who and what we REALLY are, lives on, goes on. Therefore one should not grieve over a 'departed' soul knowing this Truth. Josh lives, shall always live.....for in truth he was unborn and cannot die.......only the body is gone. The Indweller in the body of everyone is ever Indestructible.

I have known of Josh's passing for several days, but have been unable to find the words. My heart goes out to all of his family and friends. A beautiful, talented friend of mine passed away several years ago and is still deeply missed by everyone who knew her. I found comfort when her mother suggested to me that her energy had become too pure for this plane, and perhaps it was needed elsewhere in the universe. I believe this was the case for Josh. He had become too pure and beautiful, and advanced his soul level too far to exist in this world any longer....godspeed Josh, and I hope we can all catch up to you.     I was shocked to hear of the news of our loss of Josh. As many others have said, I envision him in a better place, perhaps occasionally looking down to see the influence his music and his presence in others' lives continues to have. Though I was familiar with "3 strange days", it wasn't until his later solo work that I got more familiar with how talented he truly was, and, more importantly, what a down-to-earth and kind individual he was. I count myself lucky for even the brief interactions I had with him. He was a rare soul who stood out in a world too full of big egos and superficialness. I hope to see his latest album released and will drink a toast to Josh with his other fans and friends worldwide while listening to it.

I just found out about Josh's passing.. it's an understatement to say that I am deeply saddened. I had the honor of seeing School of Fish perform three times.. the first, with only an attendance of just around 20 people. Josh and I talked at length that evening, and I thought he was a very kind and gentle human being. We discussed how I had discovered the band, which ironically, was from a small indie (locally owned) record store owner, who had just passed away from a long battle with drug addiction the week before School of Fish performed. Josh seemed to be touched by this story... I still have his signature on their first CD booklet to remember the evening.. I plan to go home tonite and listen to his music and celebrate the wonderful memories Josh and his music brought into my life. My prayers go out to his family and friends.. rest in peace, my friend shj raleigh, nc

Dear Friends, This news, right now, is unfathomable to me. I have always looked up to Josh as a musician. I met him a long time back when he was touring with SOF and Crowded House. After the show, I met him by the bus and asked him to sign a leaflet from the show. He brought me into the bus and signed it and had Michael sign it as well. We talked for it bit about music; I asked him how old he was and it ended up we were the same age. I told him how fortunate he was and how much I envied him to be in such a position as a musician at the young age that we were. I also play varied instruments and like to put most of my own tracks down in my home studio, and so I've always REALLY admired some one who does what Josh eventually did with his solo albums. I thought I would be listening forever as we both grew older. That is why the intro page to Josh's website hits very close to home with me. 1967. That someone of his youth, talent and heart can be taken away. But that is what reality shows us . That it can happen to anyone at any time. And that's it. Last Wednesday was a whole different issue to me. I had no idea of this news of Josh's passing. I only found out this Monday morning. Last Wednesday I found out that I am going to be having a baby boy. I saw him for the first time on the screen and I can't explain the joy. Later that evening, me and my wife sat around trying to come up with a name. We had previously only come up with a girl's name because we were so sure that it would be a girl. My wife eventually came up with Joel. I thought, 'Yeah, reminds me of Billy Joel', secretly. We tried and tried on middle names, and me brain decided it had to be two syllables. My mind searched it's hard drive for something to come out, and it stopped on Clayton. I asked my wife; How about Joel Clayton Marquee? We sat for a little while and let it register. Yes, we finally decided, he could be a 'JC'. And, at the time, it didn't actually register where I may have plucked that name, Clayton, from. I just had a good ring to it, and was a bit different from more common names. A couple of days later, as I put in a cd it DID register, and as a musician, I was happy that my boy's middle name was musical in nature as well. So, it striked me very hard that one of the happiest days of my life, was also one of the saddest. He was one of my favorite musicians, with such a nack for being so melodic and upbeat. But this also does show me that in death there is life. There is a reason to go on and hold precious the ones that are around you. Because they're priceless. My prayers to his family and friends, Sincerely, Paul.

During the service on Friday, which was an extremely moving tribute to Josh from his family and friends-a packed chapel with over 100 people standing outside unable to fit inside-I had a strong and powerful image of an eight year old Josh Clayton in his house in Cambridge, Mass. playing on the floor with my brother Jeff. In some ways I will always remember him as that eight year old boy-with a childlike innocence and sense of wonderment and a perpetual smile in his face. He had the same joyous expression playing baseball at his 30th birthday party that I remember seeing on his face in Little League. I am very grateful that I was able to share some very special moments in my life with Josh-when he played at my 40th birthday party on Santa Monica Pier and the night that we saw "Life Is Beautiful", which moved all of us deeply, and then went out for Indian food (after which we could not rock 24/7) followed by Roberto Benigni magically appearing on the street with Jeff and Josh expressing their appreciation to him for his art and Josh sharing his music with Benigni. Until last week, I had never heard his music other than in person...but even so there was a song of his that has always played in my head, "Backwards World". It is a wonderful gift that the songs which he composed over the past few years are recorded as he wanted them to be, on his last album which he finished just before he went into the hospital. I hope that this music will be available soon for everyone to hear as it, together with Josh's humanity and spirituality, is part of his legacy to us all. Our lives will never be the same now that Josh has passed, but we are better for having known him and our lives have been and will continue to be enriched by Josh in a very positive and inspirational way. We will all keep moving forward. Love to all of his friends, fans and family. Rick

Thoughts and emotions are tugging away at my soul, yet I remain at a loss for words. Josh's beautiful spirit will continue to flood my heart, my mind, and my soul. Whitman wrote a beautiful poem entitled "Whispters of Heavenly Death". I think it helps to soothe the pain: Whispters of heavenly death murmur'd I hear, Labial gossip of night, sibilant chorals, Footsteps gently ascending, mystical breezes wafted soft and low, Ripples of unseen rivers, tides of current flowing, forever flowing, Or is it plashing of tears? the measureless waters of human tears? I see, just see skyward, great cloud-masses, Mournfully slowly they roll, silently swelling and mixing, With at times a half-dimm'd sadden'd far-off star, Appearing and disappearing. Some parturition rather, some solemn immortal birth; On the frontiers to eyes impenetrable, Some soul is passing over. Each and everyone of you are wonderfully warm and loving people...it's refreshing. carpe diem NiCole

It is hard to express emotions you didn't know you had towards someone you had never met. Sadly, until this morning I didn't know it was you who had composed those songs.     usually opening acts don't catch my attention, but when i saw josh open up for tori amos in '96 i was really impressed. here was this guy, with all this hair, just jamming onstage, and totally digging it. my only regret is that i did not catch any of his own shows after those tori shows. i'm listening to inarticulate nature boy now, remembering when he played these songs live at the macky auditorium in boulder, co. that was a special time for a group of us and josh was sort of part that. truly sad...my heart goes out to those close to him and his music.

Josh; I still remember the very first time we met. You looked at me with those gorgeous eyes of yours and my heart was never the same. That same night, we talked until the sun came up. Instant, life-long connection. I'll cherish that memory forever, and keep it alive with your music. I'm just so sorry I never had a chance to say goodbye.

Dear Josh, I would guess that they probably have some way to read these messages where you are now...So I will write this directly to you. I am hoping the world really does make sense to you now and not just for a little while. It isn't making sense to me at all right now. Maybe you were sent here to make us sing in our cars and smile at your lyrics and humor, to teach us to all be a little more "real" in our lives. You might not be here now, but oh how you are still with us! Please keep rockin up there in the skies....I swear when I look at something beautiful, like the sun shining through the trees in late afternoon, that I still hear you singing.... Love always, Julie

His words say it best: In every moment we are consciously or unconsciously creating ourselves, each other and the world around us. Make it something great. If you don't limit what you believe is possible you will find that there are no limits on you as to the beauty and impact of what you can choose to create and be. What a loss to the world, what a wonderful musician. Such a great spirit, stolen from the world abruptly, unfairly. But we should be thankful, that we ever got to know such a wonderful person, that we ever had the opportunity to listen to such wonderful music. Josh's family and friends remain in my thoughts and prayers. And to Josh - thanks for makin our lives a little spicy. Much Love to all, JiLL

Speaking to Gaia the spirit of being, to the Shekinah, to all concerned with earthly wisdom and joy, God Said: "I have made a wonderful soul to be born in human form. This time, a boy. He will be of a sweetness rarely encountered on Earth. He will be entirely, transparently honest, and entirely without malice - not capable or interested in being false, uttering falsehoods, elevating himself at the expense of others. He will be a good son, a true and constant friend. And he will be one of my most precious music-makers, asinger and a writer of songs, songs that will live beyond his span, and songs that he will plant within those who love him, which will blossom and flower as long as he is remembered, and afterwards as well. One other thing: he will be handsome and slim, because there will not be a superfluos atom in his body. How about it? This birth will enrich the lives of so many. Should I go ahead and let him be born to that often ungrateful planet?" It's not surprising that the cosmic answer would be a resounding "YES!" God nodded. "I thought you would agree. But, I have to tell you, there's one catch. you might change your minds once you hear it." They waited. It was unimagineable that any beings in creation would change their minds. God spoke once more: "Well, I have to tell you. That catch is...that you can only have him for 32 years. Then I get him back. You will be left with the songs he made for you and in you, and for those you love." We have no doubts as to what the answer was. We have lived joyfully with it for many years. And now more than three decades later, we will still say, Thank God for Josh - Bob Rosenthal, father of Joshy's best friend since the

-Mike

I had no idea. I finally got around to sending my message for the online get well card this morning, and I got a very nice message back from Dene explaining that Josh is no longer with us. I was floored. I haven't been able to stop crying. I had no idea it was this serious. Josh's music has helped me get through so many hard times. I almost lost my husband to a rare and serious illness eighteen months ago. My husband recovered but now faces a lifelong disabilty, plus we've had to face the fact that we can't have children. I always knew that if I got too depressed I could put on one of Josh's records and feel better. I was lucky enough to see him play at Largo four times. He was always sweet and happy to take the time to say hello. He didn't even seem to mind when I got too excited one time nd grabbed him and hugged him - he just smiled and disentangled himself. I'll always remember him smiling. I'm sure one day I'll be able to think of him and smile too. Right now it's just too hard. Paula

this is too much. a few weeks ago, i wrote a message to this list about one of my best friends, named kaity. she introduced me to josh's music with the song "paint the tree green" and i was immediately hooked. then, last month she was killed in a car accident. like i said, i wrote a letter about it (she used to be a member of this list)...the point was just to say goodbye for her to a community of people who loved the same musician she did, and to remind everyone how amazingly lucky we are to be breathing. but, instead of sending it, i hit delete. too depressing i thought, too emotional, too...everything. and now josh has joined her. it's just....too much. and i'm not sure what the point of this email is either...but i'm going to send it anyway, just because i chickened out last time. just give a thought to everyone who is not around to grieve josh's death, but would be if they were here. josh, thank you for the music and inspiration. you won't be forgotten. justin

I just heard the news today, and I am so very crushed. His cancer spread so rapidly as it did to a beautiful friend of mine, Summer Brannin, who I loved very much. Her story is very similar to Josh's (you can find out about here here: http://www.vintageparts.com/summer ) in that she was young, beautiful, talented, and lost her life so quickly to cancer. Josh's music always made me incredibly happy. From School of Fish to his solo career, I loved his songwriting and his voice. One of my favorite possessions ever is my blue vinyl "Wrong" 12", which I remember bringing home and scratching my head over why the needle kept falling off the record, until I figured out you play it from the center out. I love that. I can not understand why something like this can happen to a person who is so loved, so talented, and so full of life. Wherever you are, Josh, I hope it's beautiful. Thanks for making a part of my life full of smiles and good memories. I'll always think of you that way. Love, Cari
